# Open Source SpellBook # Returning the Spellbook to Open Source MIT ## Intro: For years the collective wisdom of hundreds of data wizards has combined to create the "Spellbook", an opensource and MIT Licensed dbt project fostered by Dune Analytics. The Spellbook is an abstraction layer allowing raw blockchain data to reveal its valuable insights. Dune abandended the open source heritage of this resource in June with two decisions. 1. They moved from SPARKQL to a closed source SQL engine called DUNESQL, preventing the Spellbook models from being run on available software 2. They put a license on the resource which limits the use of the Spellbook. Our project is set up to return the Spellbook to open source by forking the last MIT licensed version, providing retroactive funding to all those who contributed, and raising an initial pool of capital to fund the future contributions to updating the OS Spellbook. ## Objectives: 1. Return the Spellbook to where it belongs: Open Source 2. Provide retroactive funding for those who built the Spellbook 3. Create a pool of capital to continue funding wizards who maintain Spellbook ## Budget: The proposed budget for Open Source Spellbook is as follows: ### Retroactive Funding: * If <20k is recieved: 100% of the Grant * We will assume we don't have the interest or capital to fund a DAO moving forward due to the lack of contributions. * If >20k is recieved: 50% of Grant * We will assme we have sufficient community interest and capital to create a DAO that will continue to fund the initiative. * We will make further efforts to fund the future contributions to the OS Spellbook * Contributors will have a 1 month window of time to prove their contributions * Contributors have two options for rewards. 1. Claim rewards 2. Forfit claim effectivly donating to future effors. * The working theory is to distribute rewards based on github commits, but we will engage the wizard community to ensure the fairest distrubution practically possible. ### Future Contributions (only if >20k is raised): * Only applies if over 20k is raised. * 50% of Grant funds into a Multi Sig Safe. * Current working theory is future rewards will be based on quadratic voting using the Gitcoin Grant Stack with support from the team. ## Impact: 1. Establishment of an enriched and widely-adopted open-source Spell Book repository. 2. Increased efficiency in Blockchain data processing and analysis within the Web3 community. 3. Strengthened collaborative ties among developers, data scientists, and Blockchain projects. 4. Standardization of data transform techniques in Web3. ## Conclusion: The Web3 ecosystem is built around open source projects getting access to public goods funding. Returning the Spellbook to opensource with the assistence of gitcoin funding is a prime example of those ethos in action. Work that has been freely contributed for years is being captured by a single company who has moved fully to licensed and closed source software. Help create a vibrant and open data ecosystem within Web3 by contributing to this round, or updating a truly OS spellbook not tied to a company.
