# Introduction to Zoom
We will be using Zoom during the whole duration of the course.
:::danger
[Download the latest version of zoom](https://zoom.us/download) (make sure you are running at least version 5.12.0)
:::
## Connecting
1. You'll need to use your UCL account ([signup with UCL account](https://ucl.zoom.us)).
1. You can connect to zoom using the desktop application or the web app.
:::spoiler Check how to change a link to use the web app
To use the web application change the zoom link from
`https://ucl.zoom.us/j/<roomNumber>` to
`https://ucl.zoom.us/wc/join/<roomNumber>`
ie., change the **j** to **wc/join**
:::
## How we will be using it
:::success
Rename yourself as: `SXXX` where XXX is the room number (105, 121 or 406) or 000 for the online attendees.
:::

### :shushing_face: Keep it quiet when joining in.
When you join the call make sure your microphone is muted :mute: (button :one:) and your camera off (button :two:)
:::warning
If you are joining from a classroom, please, keep the sound muted too, so it doesn't interferes with the microphones in the room.
:::
### Non-verbal feedback
To access to the non-verbal feedback actions, click on reactions and you'll get a popup menu similar to this one.

#### :raised_hand_with_fingers_splayed: Raise your hand to speak
We are happy to get questions during the class, but please, wait that you are asked to talk. Once your question has been answered or you don't want to ask anymore you can click there again to lower your hand.
:::info
To test it now, please, an online attendee, rise your hand when the instructor give you the signal.
:::
:::warning
The people in the room, raise the hand physically, and ask the helper in the room to pass the question.
**Someone in 4.06**, ask me through the helper something about food.
:::
#### :heavy_check_mark: / :X: for questions in class
During the class we will be asking some yes/no questions to see whether you agree/disagree with something, or have finished some steps.
Let's test it now answering the question asked by the instructor.
:::info
People in rooms put a yellow/ping post it on top of the screens.
:::
### :left_speech_bubble: Chatting
Button :four: is for chatting. Feel free to use it to post a general question to the instructor. However, since its interface is not very "user friendly" we won't use it for debugging problems. Rather we will **prefer to use the HackMD shared document** where we will have a place to post questions.
### Stop full screen mode when someone shares screen
In zoom settings you can disable that when someone shares the screen your view becomes full-screen.
To do so go to your
zoom settings :gear:
- share screen :arrow_up:
- :black_square_button: Enter full screen when a participant shares screen

### How to see everything in a small screen?
We suggest you distribute your windows like this, splitting the desktop into two halves, where one half is what the instructor is sharing, and the other half for you to follow along (terminal, ide, notes).

_Suggested desktop layout on a single screen: On the left the streaming application (blackboard, zoom, ...), on the right your local applications_

### Using desktops in room to connect to zoom
You can use the provided desktops with
- a guest account or
- as external display via HDMI
If you want to connect with a guest account, choose one username from [the list of accounts](/4sN69l_MQAurfgD5zq8wOA) and delete that line.
### 🔲🔳 Group discussions
There will be activities that require discussions between 2-5 people. For the online participants we will use Breakout rooms.
Normally one of you will need to share the screen (or use liveshare addon) and everyone engage in the discussions.
