David checked with May, who explained that she'd proposed it to them along with some other suggestions, but hadn't received a response back. So there's nothing more for us to do on this for the time being. - Trains - Jon suggested: "I have no idea what exactly to analyse, but you can get lots of data about trains: https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/developers/darwin-data-feeds/". - It generated quite a lot of interest... looks like a goer. - NoOB ## 5th July 2023 - David L-J - Isabel - Ed Chapman - Katriona ### Notes - Boris Bikes - David given final review - all good - Ryan also happy (according to David) so no blockers - Eurovision - Making progress - Katriona still has to add her model - Ed has a few ouststanding tasks, esp. getting the MCMC code to work in the notebook. Competition simulation code has to be added, which is a big chunk of code, so discussion is needed as to how to approach this. - Katriona suggested putting the large pieces of code into functions and importing them. - ## 7th June 2023 - David L-J - Isabel F - Camila - Katriona - Ryan - Jon ### Notes - Boris Bikes - Markus and Camila addressed the review comments. - The story won't work with Binder, but it never will (the dataset is too large). - We all agree it can go ahead without the binder requirement. - Next step is to put it on the Website - Camila will contact Jo from comms in case there's. - Thesis story - Katriona: Not yet met up - Overwatch - David: Not yet reviewed - Eurovision - There's been more work on writing rather than coding recently - We've all had a bit of a break from it recently. - We do have direction and have had meetings though. ## 24th May 2023 - David L-J - Isabel F - Camila - Katriona - Ryan - Markus - Jon ### Notes - Eurovision - Blog post published - Eurovision TDS meetings continuing on Fridays - To ask Jo to review story - Overwatch - David reviewing - Boris Bike - Has been reviewed by Ryan and David - Review to be addressed - Goal is to publish before hack week ## 12th April 2023 - David L-J - Markus - Martin S - Camila - Jon - Radka - Nathan ### Notes - Discussions on Eurovision ## 15th February 2023 ### Participants - David L-J - Markus - Martin S - Ryan - Kat - Joe C - Camila - Jon - Isabel ## Agenda - Eurovision (Katriona, Martin S, Radka, Ed Chapman, Jon, Joe Palmer) - Plan is to replicate and expand on a paper which looks at biases in Eurovision voting patterns - predict who will win - We have collected and cleaned most of the data - Starting modelling - Continuing visualisations - Plan to reach out to Jo Dungate to update next week - Cov19 wastewater story - Not much to update now - Ethos (Ryan, Isabel, Kat) - Not much to update now - Overwatch (Markus) - In review: One review received, waiting for the other - Boris bikes (Camila, Markus) - Need to work with Fede on last broken issue before submit for review. - New stories? - Park run? - Stack exchange data ## 1st February 2023 ### Agenda - Eurovision - Tight deadline (start of May) so need to assign tasks - Thinking about visualisations to do with data - cov19 wastewater story - [name=Aoife] Should have time this month (next week) to get somewhere with the reviewers' comments - Ethos story - Still coming along fine - getting to the stage of starting to write it up - Pay the rent - Need to find more open data - This story is somewhat on the back burner at the moment. ## 18th January 2023 ### Participants - Camila - Kat - Joe Cerniglia - Joe Palmer - Markus - Isabel - Ed C - Luke ### Agenda - Ethos story (Isabel, Kat, Ryan) - [Github issue](https://github.com/alan-turing-institute/TuringDataStories/issues/171) - Have been investigating the British Library dataset of UK PhD theses - Language modelling of subject matter - can we predict subject given title / abstract - buzzwords over time - geographical distribution - looking at gender distribution - When the story is written up, contact reviewers: Fede and Markus have volunteered - Boris bikes (Camila, Markus, ..) - Using the TFL Santander bike journey dataset - Mostly there. Now begins the work of revision. I have described in my conclusion the phenomenon of a subtle mismatch between training and validation data. I have discovered this phenomenon has a name, covariate drift/shift, and that there are techniques for measuring it and even perhaps treating it. See https://towardsdatascience.com/how-dis-similar-are-my-train-and-test-data-56af3923de9b. This is one of many useful articles. I am working on doing both as an addition to the story. The goal is to make the code and narrative useful to anyone who encounters covariate drift in their own machine learning projects. - [name=Aoife] Wastewater: - Got some excellent feedback from Radka, slowly working through - Content essentially done - Could probably submit next week at the earliest? - Radka to give a couple tech talks about MCMC next month, her plan is to give them as notebooks that we can turn into a "tutorial story".
