--- ###### tags: `Universe Guide` --- # Canon DAO Template *A proposal for DAOhaus/DAOstillery and GitcoinDAO in response to the forthcoming Gitcoin Universe Guide* ::: spoiler **Background Context on the Project with Gitcoin** - From November-February, I led a RaidGuild raid in service to GitcoinDAO to create the third comic of their ongoing Gitcoin Comics series. The [*Provisional Guide to the Gitcoin Universe*](https://hackmd.io/@TravisWyche/AProvisionalGuidetotheGitcoinComicUniverse) was the secondary deliverable. The UG in it's current state provides a *very rough* sketch for how a community might utilize Web3-DAO tooling to track changes to open-source, collectively owned canonical lore. - The UG is loosely based on the Cellarius Universe Guide, developed by ConsenSys circa 2019. - The UG is currently being elaborated into a book as the third installment of an ongoing series of publications by Kevin Owocki, preceeded by [*Greenpilled*](https://store.gitcoin.co/products/green-pill-book-digital-edition) (released at ETH Denver, Feb 2022) and the forthcoming *Impact DAOs* (set to release at DevConnect, Amsterdam, April 2022). - The goal of this project is to invite a community of creative and technical contributors to steer the direction of the community lore - built around the comic universe and its related transmedia outlets - and iterate on the architecture of the Web3-DAO tooling to further the ideation of open-source, collectively owned IP as an experiment in *agile imagination software* development (literally and allegorically). - We want to empower contributors to be as creative as possible while maintaining some kind of conceptual tether to the core principles of the mother DAO (in this case Gitcoin's principles of regenerative cryptoeconomics, nurturing open-source software, and elaborating public goods funding for the greater good). - In addition to the principles, the guide is charged with collecting the visual, narrative, and other lore-based assets of the comic projects and tracking the evolution of their development. This includes artwork, character details, landscapes/worlds, artifacts/objects, narrative storylines, maps of relations and locations, and other minutae. The significance of this asset tracking is to ensure that new elements are defined in relation to real world references. That is, we must ensure that future contributors don't spin out on pure fantasy by maintaining an explicit relation to IRL crypto protocols, events, tools, and community narratives. - The comic (considered as a material snapshot of the lore at time of publication) is assocated with an NFT auction that pulls lore from the comic to iterate into NFTs (and other transmedia outlets) with the goal of fund raising. The first iteration of this was called [The Greatest LARP](https://greatestlarp.com/) and displays content from comic #1. - The auction might also be considered a funnel/portal to attract and entice contributors to interact with the UG governance process. The comic + auction + UG are reliant upon each other's mechanisms, especially as the project increasingly decentralizes from a core creative team to an open-source narrative experiment. ::: --- ### TL;DR - How might we craft **a DAO template for tracking and compensating open-source collectively owned contributions**? The template has a specific use case (for Gitcoin), but could be adapted to many other needs/ends. - Might we consider this an opportunity to apply some of the recent DH ideas to a high-visibility use case and **battletest some new legos**. - We might begin with a consultation, working towards a model, and then building it if there is desire. - **Funding is available** for an MVP sketch, and more could be allocated from Gitcoin to scope/detail/build the work. ::: spoiler **Potential Dots Connected in this Proposal** - [Yeeter](https://yeet.daohaus.club/projects) - [DAOgroni](https://daogroni.daohaus.club/) - Harberger NFT experiment - Baal Shamans - Baal ERC20 shares - Cross-chain minion - WarCamp reboot: a Web3-DAO-native org management model as an alternative to Holacracy - Uberhaus reboot: correlations to governance mining - Wargames reboot: UX battletesting live and in public - [Warcamp Workstream Commitment Staking Proposal](https://forum.daohaus.club/t/warcamp-workstream-commitment-staking/10808/16) - [A framework for building towards a robust HAUS tokenomics model](https://forum.daohaus.club/t/a-framework-for-building-towards-a-robust-haus-tokenomics-model/10781) - Alignment with Magemsiths V3 roadmap ::: ### Problem Space *The specific areas that DAOstillery might contemplate and develop.* #### Governance and DAO Architecture - The UG proposes a workstream composed of nested Moloch DAOs, a totally new concept for Gitcoin. Contributors would spin up their Yeeter projects to gather funding with a *CaptainsDAO* holding majority shares in every new Yeeter and serving as a vetting committee to ensure quality and relevance of the proposed work. The idea was the Yeeter model would bake-in accountability from local contributors/instances to the CaptainsDAO, with Gitcoin (or a delegate) holding majority shares in the CaptainsDAO to ensure accountibiltiy with the mother DAO. Also seems like an excellent use case for utilizing the cross-chain minions to bridge GTC mainnet<>Gnosis to facilitate smooth/cheap governance. - How might we elaborate the functionality of Moloch/Baal V3 to this specific use case? - How might the Yeeter be deployed for effectively securing accountibility in governance and as a public goods funding mechanism for GitcoinDAO via this workflow? ![](https://i.imgur.com/uetwgde.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/t19Lu5K.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/FURVnDH.jpg) #### Contributor Flow - A contributor will submit a change to an asset: character info, artwork, narrative elements, etc. - How might we utilize the Poster contract to render these changes through a proposal flow that allows the DAO to ratify changes? - Can the poster contract extend to other DAO-owned assets, or might another mechanism be used for NFTs, various file types hosted on IPFS, etc? - Can the DAO collectively own the assets while also ensuring that an individual contributor retains a tether to their specific contribution? - **Sample Flow #1 - Updating Canon**: contributor submits a PR > proposal created on CaptainsDAO > passed proposal updates canon (the asset) > contributor accredation/reward is attached to the ratified asset as long as it remains canon along with any previous contributors - **Sample Flow #2 - Replacing Canon**: contributor submits a PR > proposal created on CaptainsDAO > passed proposal updates canon (the asset) > contribtuor accredation/reward is attached to the ratified asset, while contributors associated with the replaced asset are removed from canon and no longer receive credit/reward ![](https://i.imgur.com/q8NhIOA.jpg) #### Incentive Mechanisms - How is the contributor incentivized to make submissions? Cultural bragging rights, proof of participation via POAPs or NFTs, bounties, or streaming? Maybe a soft governance problem... - How might the financial incentives for submissions be decided collectively without opening up a huge collusive attack vector - through the previously mentioned DAO architecture or can it be baked in to the submission process? - If a submission is ratified as canon, how might the contributer get paid without gamifying the submission process so that the economic reward becomes the only incentive? - How might the financial rewards be distributed with maximum transparency to the higher tier DAOs (Captains and Gitcoin)? Using a tool like Dework to review and execute submissions in batches? - **Sample Flow**: contributor submits a PR > proposal created on CaptainsDAO > passed proposal updates the canon > the completed task is added to a payout queue and the original task is updated with the ratified asset > payout queue is routinely reviewed and executed by the CaptainsDAO ![](https://i.imgur.com/rj16KRj.jpg) #### Regen NFT Standard - We might consider an NFT that evolves to reflect changes in the canonical lore (triggered by proposals to the CaptainsDAO?), future releases of the comics, or other events. - Related to the incentive mechanisms above, how might the NFT design encourage participation while discouraging degen/perverse gamification of the system? - The goal might be to develop a uniquely regen NFT standard as a new meme-able archetype/case study that can be tested in the UG experiment, but ultimately becomes a public good in itself that can be forked by the wider community. - References: - Harberger tax NFTs - DAOgroni transmutations - a novel utilization of Baal V3 member shares as ERC20 tokens - tiered membership in a Moloch DAO baked-in to the NFT - novel use of ragequit/ragekick in the NFT to discourage sale on the open market - token-gating of collectively owned DAO assets correlated to number of shares correlated to number of ratified submissions - transmutation of loot to voting shares correlated to ratified submissions - etc etc etc. ### Cultural and Financial Incentives - This is an opportunity to mobilize **DAOgroni, Yeeter, Harberger NFT experiments,** and other DH alpha legos for a high profile client/use case while also experimenting for our own internal use. - How might we consider the recent [Workstream Commitment Staking proposal](https://forum.daohaus.club/t/warcamp-workstream-commitment-staking/10808) or additional utility of the HAUS token in reference to the recent [tokenomic framework proposal](https://forum.daohaus.club/t/a-framework-for-building-towards-a-robust-haus-tokenomics-model/10781) to move towards a Web3-DAO-native workstream template? - This point relates to Dekan's (et al) recent call to consider **DAO templates**, the possibility of participating in the Gnosis DAO Pattern Language Wiki (with templates or legos), and might generally serve to bring lots of attention to our unique and idiosyncratic way of problem solving DAO scenarios with undying dedication to open-source and community owned principles. - **We can battletest the model through DH Wargames.** The initiative would certainly gather lots of new participants from the Gitcoin community. This will greatly accelerate our burgeoning UX research and testing initiatives. We can design particular scenarios to test individual parts and work towards "all out war" of the larger DAO model. - Might this inform [**the Uberhaus reboot?**](https://hackmd.io/@Dekan/rkDOsVGX9) - If we break apart the elements of this UG DAO architecture into milestones and map them onto the [Magesmiths V3 Roadmap](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1oZypPzqHVaJecdtTpAhgYG5D9o3iZKGX7H6CRfzkSOA/edit?usp=sharing) we might be able to streamline the work to coincide with our ongoing DH V3 framework. The goal is for this initiative to **serve as a supplement to V3 development and avoid becoming a distraction**, or at least be a financially justifiable distraction. - Is this an opportunity for DH to **recapture (redirect) some of the narrative related to DAO architecture, models, patterns, templates**? - DH might consider forking the UG model to increase community contributions of our own lore generation or for other use cases (like RaidGuild lore!).
