這首歌的歌詞靈感是來自同名的英國戲劇所啟發，作詞者之一 Ric Marlow 除了作詞，它同時也是一名經驗豐富的電視演員。
歌詞之中以「一嘗蜂蜜」(a taste of honey) 來比喻初吻的感受，講述著那遠距離的關係之中的思念與歸家的渴望。

這首歌被廣泛認為是20世紀最成功的流行樂之一，最主要的原因便是有許多知名的流行歌手或組合翻唱過這首歌，其中包括 Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass 的演奏，這個版本衝上了1965年的流行樂排行榜第7名，並且還獲得了數個葛來美獎。
