This [markdown document](https://guides.github.com/features/mastering-markdown/) will be used to develop and record text related to the [preregistration campaign](https://github.com/FreeOurKnowledge/community/issues/11) proposed for the [Free Our Knowledge website](https://www.freeourknowledge.org/). The file is stored in our [Github repository](https://github.com/FreeOurKnowledge/community), but can be edited on HackMD for easy use (if you're currently in Github, click the 'Edit on HackMD' button above). The platform is currently built to allow 3 different texts (header, rationale, criteria), but we can change this if there is a good reason to do so. We're planning to test the effects of different campaign descriptions (e.g., positive/negative framing) on sign-up rates, so copy and paste alternative versions as required below.
### Version 1 (Basic, Gain frame)
#### Header
This campaign is to **[pre-register](https://help.osf.io/hc/en-us/articles/360019738834-Create-a-Preregistration#Go-to-the-OSF-Prereg-Challenge-landing-page) at least one study in the next two years once the pledge activates**.
#### Rationale
Pre-registration requires researchers to specify their research objectives, hypotheses, data collection protocol, and confirmatory analysis plans prior to beginning a study.
Pre-registration helps to [improve the reliability of scientific research and hypothesis testing](https://www.pnas.org/content/115/11/2600#sec-15).
A collective campaign to pre-register will help make pre-registration a norm for research. This helps to create a global research environment that supports rigorous research practices.
#### Criteria
* You will receive an email confirming your pledge to this campaign. If you would like to take your pledge further, you can also sign up at the mentor level.
* Your pledge is anonymous at this stage.
* Your pledge will activate when X people from your field (as determined by researcher field in ORCID) have joined the pledge. The two-year time period starts from when the pledge has activated. You will receive an email when this happens. At this point, your pledge will become public.
* From this point, you have two years to complete a study pre-registration: this is a time-stamped, publicly available document that can be verified as existing before the study is conducted. It can be hosted on any of the [available pre-registration platforms](https://osf.io/zab38/wiki/home/?view)
### Version 2 (Basic, Loss frame)
Pre-registration helps to [prevent questionable research practices that inflate positive results from hypothesis testing](https://www.pnas.org/content/115/11/2600).
A collective campaign to pre-register will help show that pre-registration is not just practised by a minority in research. This helps to create a global research environment that guards against questionable research practices.

### Version 3 (What-Why-When, Loss frame)
#### What's the pledge?

#### When do I do it?
Your pledge will activate when X people from your field (as determined by researcher field in ORCID) have joined the pledge. The two-year time period starts from when the pledge has activated.
#### I'd pledged, what next?
* You will receive an email confirming your pledge to this campaign. If you would like to take your pledge further, you can also sign up at the mentor level.
* Your pledge is anonymous at this stage. You don't need to do anything until a critical mass of researchers from your field join the campaign as well. You will receive an email when this happens. At this point, your pledge will become public.
