Warning: Spoilers Ahead (we haven’t really checked if there are spoilers but you should assume there are spoilers, just to be safe) Modern Family by ABC has been one of the funniest and hottest sitcoms of the network for nearly a decade. The show is based on a big, dysfunctional but nonetheless heartwarming and close family and their daily adventures and encounters. It’s a comedy that combines some of the hug-free, ironic stylings of shows like The Office and Arrested Development with the sentimentalism of more traditional family sitcoms. The premier reveals three different families to the audience. The typical sitcom mom and dad are played by Julie Bowen and Ty Burrel respectively. By deluding himself into believing he is hip and cool, Burrell takes the role of a dumb TV dad up a notch. The mother is depicted by Bowen as a former wild child who now worries that her children will pursue her former rebellious path. Their three kids transform daily parenting struggles into comedy gold — a high school cutie, a precocious daughter, and a klutzy son, all recognizable TV styles.
In the opener, the second family, a gay pair played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet, become adoptive parents. On CBS ‘The Class’, Ferguson's comedy skills were obvious, then blurred in Fox's Do Not Interrupt. Here, and especially across from Stonestreet, Ferguson realizes his potential.
Patriarch Jay Pritchett (Ed O'Neill), his Columbian wife, Gloria (Sofia Vergara), and her pre-teen son, Manny (Rico Rodriguez), are in charge of the household. Jay struggles to remain young and keep up with Gloria and not be mistaken for her father, as he tries to help Manny while he seeks to maintain his national identity. Manny is the source of a lot of humor from this part of the family, as he's in the midst of the sensibilities and parental methods of Jay and Gloria.
One of the things that I really like about the series is that it tries every type of combination possible, it is absolutely impossible to pick one favorite duo in this particular sitcom. Let it be the main ones, such as Phil and Claire, Gloria and Jay, Cam and Mitch, or the others such as the iconic fire and nice duo (i.e. the iconic popular sister, gay brother duo of Claire and Mitch), the adorable opposites duo of young Manny and Luke, of the other crazy opposites duo of Hailey and Alex or the emotional father and daughter or father and son duo of Jay and Claire, Phil and Alex or Haley and of Jay and Mitch and Phil and Luke. I could list out every combination that this show's amazing creators Steve Levitan and Lloyd have tried (they have tried everything) but that would just make this blog extremely boring, so let's just not. However, I am going to talk about the ones that are really close to my heart

Luke and Phil

If you don't like Luke and Phil and you think they are dumb (I’m 100% sure there is no human being alive who doesn't find them adorable , but still let’s just be clear so that the dumbos stop reading this precious article) then please, this article is not for you. And I hope you die (just kidding) (I'm not kidding, and no, I am not Colombian). What’s not to love about them!!! The cute little Luke who admires everything about his dad and looks up to him and finds him so funny. And then there is the loving dad who just wants his son to think of him like his idiot friend and who would even agree to get hit with basketball a hundred times on his head just to keep his buddy smiling. The duo is really something, and thinking about Luke all grown up and leaving his super dad is just heartbreaking. See that is the thing that I love about this show, it’s hella funny, with amazing writing and hella funny characters, but it also hits you perfectly on the emotional content. But talking more about the comedy part, I mean who didn't crack up during the godfather bit where Phil is at Joe's christening and Luke is with a gun and sabotaging everything, or when Phil used Luke to emotionally manipulate his competition. I mean yeah, the two of them were dorks, but they were adorable dorks who made an awesome optimistic team that just liked to wonder (while Claire made the Jim faces at the camera and suffered in the background).

Claire and Mitch

Fire and Nice! A sibling bond is always a very special bond, and seeing them go so well together after becoming adults makes me wonder if that's what Alex and Haley's relationship is gonna be like, which always brings a smile to my face ( I did not say anything about Luke and Alex or Luke and Haley because he was always hanging out with Manny which was iconic enough). Every time Jay would say something like “Gloria was the best thing that happened to me”, I would just look at the two of them. They were always together, telling each other it's okay. He was the mommy’s son, she was the father’s daughter; he was the gay son who felt a bit emotionally distant from his tough dad and she was the boy of the family (who was very wild and popular when she was a teen) who thought that her mom was a maniac (DeDe was a bit cuckoo to be fair, she did attack Gloria twice who had, later on, attacked both his son and Jay with a gun and killed a rat and left his head outside so the other rats could be taught a lesson, Jay had a very extreme choice of wives). However, we even get to see many scenes where Claire is just making fun of his little brother while Mitch just takes it all in, turning redder than he usually is and that is what this show is about!!! It's relatability because whoever has an elder sibling who actually is very caring but doesn't show it and teases him/her, or whoever has a younger sibling who is always made fun of by him/her, knows how that feels like!

Jay and Phil

Jay was the cool guy and Phil was the sweetheart who just wanted his father-in-law to like him. Throughout the series, one of the funniest moments are the ones where Jay and Phil are together. We see Phil trying his hardest, trying to either look masculine and strong in front of his tough father in law or trying to do fun stuff with him. He just wanted to bond with him while Jay just could not bear the thought of him being left alone with Phil, the far-too-excited-about-everything, sweet and dorky weirdo who knocked up his only daughter before getting married to her. (However, he did like him secretly as there have been some scenes in the series where he accepts the fact that Phil is a nice guy and he is glad that he is the one who married his daughter but he just tries too hard). I think the first time Jay truly lets Phil know that he actually really likes him and they have a wholesome moment is in season 7 when he tells him about the Irish pub and makes Phil sit with him for a drink which was in the memory of his fallen friend who had died that day. It was better late than ever! And, in the coming seasons, we see some more scenes like this which is what makes modern family different from other funny sitcoms (see what I did here? I used the word funny and that means that F.R.I.E.N.D.S is not included.) (Jk, that show is okay but it's just toooooo overrated)

Luke and Hailey

We don't really see the two of them together that much (shame, right?). But the first scene involving the two of them that really touched my heart was when he hid Hailey's college acceptance letter because he didn't want his big sister to go!!!! AWWWWWW! :,( Then there was also the time when she was finally leaving for college and because he was crying he wore a mask so that she couldn't see him cry ( what happened to that adorable little Luke??!! Now he's 21 and really hot and even though he's older than me it feels wrong to call him hot, because like I watched him grow up, but then I also didn't cuz I started watching this series in 2019). Note: Please don't hate me if there was a duo that you really liked and that wasn't there, as I've said before, all of them have a thing of their own and the amazing writers have made sure that none of them is boring. I've written about only some of them because they had a very special, emotional impact on me, because I personally found their interactions to be very wholesome And special note: Gloria and Cam are the two characters that are just starsss! I'm not insulting the other characters, they did well with people, but these two were something else. That is why I have not mentioned them in my list of fav duos. Gloria is like a hotter, equally dangerous but less weird version of Creed Bratton (both of them are like doing their own random thing in the background while everyone just rolls with it as they have either really stopped caring or there is nothing else that they can really do). And Cam, oh my! Cam! He is like the most extra person I've ever seen, and his chaotic sassy energy is what makes this character absolutely lovable!!

In their own way, each of the families has its own dynamics and is charmingly dysfunctional. Modern Family focuses on a number of circumstances that are popular today but have not been commonly discussed by primetime sitcoms in the past, covering multi-cultural partnerships, same-sex marriages, and adoption. The beautifully observed content exaggerates relatable situations but mostly remains credible.

I have to admit that I thought the humor might be a little too wide for my tastes, but I was pleasantly surprised with this being primetime content. The last TV series I went through as quickly as this was The Office (yes, I am going to talk about this show a lot on this website), which I watched sitting in almost one spot. At no point did it seem a hassle to watch this, as each episode has a different theme and yet manages to work together in the series' overall narrative arc as a whole.

I find this extended family and their interactions with each other a lot of fun to watch. The family is just beginning to get to know each other all over again, it seems. It’s more noticeable when they start matching up some of the family members that we don't usually see with each other. That's part of the fun this season brings. I liked the fact that they had strange couplings. With so many characters, I can see how this series had the longevity to run for a full 11 seasons full of amazing episodes.
