--- title: My general thoughts on Meta's visions description: I plotted down my thoughts on Meta and their vision of the Metaverse here --- # My general thoughts on Meta's visions ***Meta being the "backbone" of the Metaverse is simply wrong.*** And I think I have good reasons to think that. If you've not heard somehow, Facebook has renamed themselves to "Meta", to portray their vision of building a Metaverse, which would basically make it so that most, if not all things, are interconnected by a single service, through which assets of pretty much any kind could be shared **though, I think Meta, or even other companies having control over this, is a very, VERY BAD idea.** --- Meta, or previously Facebook, has proven that they do not care about their users or their rights several times before, be it through invasion of privacy, or running psychological studies on around 650k people without consent, they just generally don't care about their users, what those users think, nor the feedback etc, and just do what brings them the most profit overall. now, if Meta is going to build the "backbone" of this entire thing, that would mean that they'd have full access to it, without restrictions, and could control how anyone and everyone using "their metaverse" perceives the world. this could be abused in so many ways, many of them I don't even want to describe, but I am still going to mention things like changing political views or opinions on people, companies, governments, and soo many other things for the worse, without any consequence other than at most everyone on this planet letting out a sigh of annoyance. I genuinely call for you, the person reading this, to think about what is going to happen if we let this through we NEED to make this Open Source, and preferably Decentralised if we want to make this work, otherwise it is going to be abused to no end. they *-as in companies like Meta-* would at most put their own income first, and their own goals, and NOT what general society wants, at most they'd care about maximizing their profit at all costs. #### and the worst thing? ### Nobody would be able to stop them. Governments couldn't help either, the companies/corporations/etc could literally boycott them for their own advantage. --- if we don't invest our time into making this thing focused on ourselves, as a community, as society, **right now**, then that time won't ever come, and we will simply regret it in the end as we suffer under Meta's, or anyone else's control over our own perception. sure, one might say "oh but none of that's gonna happen", and you may be right to a certain extent, though, *I don't think a "it'll be fine" attitude is correct for this situation in the slightest*. I simply do not want to take any chances of any of this happening, for the better of all of us. and I hoped you all would think so too if not, then I'd like for you to know, why would you rather put humanity into the hands of a company, instead of into the hands of the people? this is not a question to offend anyone, but I am genuinely curious as to why some people (supposedly) think like this. > as usual, to comment on HackMD simply select text and start typing on the right, and be respectful!
