Revolved around the annual conference under the same name, it provides students overlooked by the educational system an accessible stage to present their brilliance. It's the stepping portal toward the open source world, the honored arena of home-brew projects and researches, and the crossroad where newcomers and skilled programmers collide and spark innovations. Inspired by a wave of flourishing IT conventions in 2012, SITCON was founded by student FOSS volunteers solely over the Internet. Starting from a simple idea: to hold a conference "of the students, by the students, for the students," the proposal frenzied like wildfire, and a full-fledged task-force formed within the blink of 3 days. RSVPs ran out almost immediately, participants from graduates to middle school students packed the lecture halls with glee, sharing topics from digital arts to game development——for the first time in Taiwan, they felt seen. The conference body soon evolved into a supportive student IT community, running local meetups and educational events for no cost. ![SITCON 2020](https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50257492908_81b994809a_k.jpg)
SITCON 2020 “#define student”
Photo by 丞相 @ SITCON, CC BY-SA 2.0
In 2020, SITCON has become the annual fiesta with over 1,000 participants across Asia. The wide range of sessions demonstrated the unlimited potential of students, encouraging them to express their creativity through cutting-edge technologies, strengthen their skills with indie projects and innovative researches, and bond with talented individuals across campus borders. The impact has also gained interest from the public sector, affected university entrance policy, and inspired spinoffs in neighboring countries. ## Project created in 2012 ## Credits SITCON community members. Co-founders, represented by founding team leaders: <https://sitcon.org/2013/>. ## Support received from Nearly a thousand staff members and student speakers have pledged their contribution since 2013. Free and open source software communities in Taiwan and Asia have also lent their hands, including (but not limited to) COSCUP, HITCON, and MozTW. Support from research institutes, governmental funds, and non-profits further helped the community to reach out with more confidence and credibility: - Open Source Software Foundry (OSSF), Research Center for Infomation Technology Innovation, Academia Sinica (Taiwan). - Information Technology Software Academy (ITSA), Ministry of Education (Taiwan). - Open Culture Foundation (OCF). - Institute of Information Science, Academia Sinica (Taiwan). ## Objectives SITCON is voluntarily formed by students, independently held by students, while keeping students as main aim and interest. Since its founding, the community has striven to provide a free, accessible space for students to show off their best, and for “outcasts” to find likeminded fellows. Being the only ones who are interested in technology in a group usually leads to nowhere but fixing others’ computers; by connecting isolated individuals across the spectrum, SITCON encourages its members to assemble and make impacts to their campus and local communities. Topic-wise, SITCON emphasizes the importance of innovation and down-to-earth practical skills. The community has put significant effort to mend the gap between academic training and real-world IT issues, encouraging the exchange of innovative ideas and cultivating hands-on implementation. The annual forum event in SITCON pushes the idea even further, by inviting school officials and IT industry veterans to the table. {%youtube oAtiOrpj6DQ %}
SITCON Summer Camp 2019 “Open Source Universe”
## Project History SITCON originated in August 2012 by a group of students with passion in technology, diverse in their background: network administration, financial management, cybersecurity, and digital expressions. Devoid of the opportunity to share and inspire each other, with only large-scale conventions existed as their reference, they managed to accumulate wide support from high schools and universities to make the event happen. On March, SITCON 2013 took place at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST). Participants across professions and age swarmed the corridors, and a renaissance of student meetups has flourished throughout the nation. University clubs formed by SITCON participant joined the effort to encourage indie projects and open source contribution; hackathons and workshops were supported by local talents. After SITCON 2014, student speakers from the conference held over 24 local meetups in a single year, traveled across the mountains to bring technology insights to the sleepy east coast of Taiwan, and started the first SITCON Camp and SITCON Hour of Code——an outreaching effort to bring free and open source software (FOSS)and programming techniques to high school students and below. Today, SITCON has developed into a community with more than 8,000 students. The community is still growing and evolving, passing down the torch of belief. ## People SITCON and its relative events are organized by the annual staff member. The hierarchy was largely inspired by FLOSS communities, where decisions are made collectively on an equal basis, regardless of position or team. Meetings are hosted with open door policy, and livestreams would be provided to a mailing list accessible to all staff members. ## Keywords Student, Information Technology, Conference ![SITCON Logo](https://sitcon.org/branding/withname.svg =168x120) [Official Website](https://sitcon.org/).[YouTube](https://youtube.com/user/sitconarchive).[Facebook](https://facebook.com/SITCONtw).[Twitter](https://twitter.com/sitcontw).[Plurk](https://plurk.com/SITCON).[Instagram](https://instagram.com/sitcon.tw).[Telegram](https://t.me/SITCONtw).[Flickr](https://flickr.com/photos/sitcon/).[HackMD](https://hackmd.io/@SITCON).[Mailing list](https://groups.google.com/g/sitcon-general).[IRC](https://sitcon.org/irc).Discord
