# Mining rework & Introduction of Telescience (WIP PAGE)
This document serves as a design overview / information hub for the **[Mining Rework](https://github.com/DrDuckedGoose/BeeStation-Hornet/tree/popes-mining)**.

## Intent
::: info
Generaly, the goal isn't to entirely remove what's already present in mining, but change the delivery.
:::
The main intent of this rework is to change elements of mining that aren't typically considered enjoyable, while preserving the facets that are. This includes de-emphasizing manual mining, and re-emphasizing what miners like best, combat & loot.
## Automatic Mining - Bluespace Drill Stations

::: info
Although the main concept of these machines is to avoid the common scenario of the crew lacking resources when a miner isn't present, it also offers, hopefully, engaging & interesting gameplay.
:::
Bluespace Drill Stations are large machines that collect ore at a given altitude, azimuth and depth. These values will generally translate to a real point on the map and collect ore from there, players can use a core sampler to figure out what resources that area contains, and if they want to mine it.
In a generic setup, there are 5 of these machines on lavaland, one on each far corner and one in the middle. Contained inside small outposts, drill-curators travel between them to fix & maintain them.
These bulky machines will occasionally break down, rarely if there are no drill-curators alive, and more commonly if there is. Drill curators will have to diagnose and fix issues that arise within the drills.
The drills are powerful & load machines, they attract much attention from lavaland's fauna. Occasionally, attacks will be led on the drills by varios lavaland monsters. A tendril will spawn nearby that births a limited number of mobs to attack the outpost. These attacks have varying intensity, meaning many tendrils can spawn around the outpost for an assault, depending on the intesity.
## A Miner 'Replacement' - Drill-Curator
:::info
Mining tools aren't completely phased out of the job, they are still required to gather specific resources, like gibonite. Additionally, Drill-Curators still need to use them to explore lavaland, gathering core-samples.
:::
The drill-curator is a new role that 'replaces' miner, a mix between scientist & old miner.
The drill-curator still has access to mining tools for manual mining, as they will have to clear rock & stone to collect new core samples.
Core samples are scientific readings of a given area that determine what ores it potentially holds. Successfully exploiting a specific reading, drilling a special area, will yield research & profit bonuses.
However, it is also the drill-curator's job to maintain and fix these drills. These drills will require adjustments to their target to yield the highest efficiency, otherwise they only provide a sub-par amount of resources. Additionally, a drill-curator must also repair drills when they malfunction, a complex process that requires expert diagnosis.
Additionally, drill-curators must also defend the drills from various attacks. Drill-curators can spend points gained overtime, when drills are functioning, to purchase tools to help them defend the outposts. These tools range from automatic turrets to manual traps.
## Traveling Between Outposts - Telescience

::: info
The job is meant to be a mix of science & mining. The technical demand of the drills mixed with the rough nature of exploring lavaland and fighting fauna. Telescience offers a way of travling between outposts quickly to avoid tedious travel times. However, it is not easy.
:::
Telescience is a new science introduced as a way of traveling between outposts quickly. Each outpost has a dedicated telescience chamber drill-curators can use to travel between locations on the same z-level.
These machines require precise formulas to function. Users must input a graph-formula to weave a bluespace-thread around various 'dark-zones'. Navigating through a 'dark-zone' could spell doom, ranging from explosions to monsters from the warp spilling from the portal platform.
Additionally, sometimes 'warped-zones' can be seen on the bluespace-radar. Users can navigate to these zones to explore much smaller gateway-mission-esc rooms & areas.
These machines can be constructed on any z-level. However, they are blacklisted from teleporting into secure locations, unless emagged.
