Since we originally launched our Plus Size Airline Policies in 2018, the travel industry has changed a lot.
We've learned a lot more about Spirit's plus-size policy which makes traveling that much friendlier and easier.
Like many other airlines, Spirit Airlines requires plus-size passengers to purchase a second seat if you mind encroaching on your neighbors or can't fit your armrest between two seats.
Spirit does not offer a refund on second seat tickets, unlike Southwest. Despite its low-budget brand, this can have an impact on many travelers who need or want a second seat for comfort.
Although there is no information available on this, like many airlines, you can ask at the counter if the flight is full. If the flight is not full, ask to be moved to a spot inside the plane next to an empty seat. This tactic is not a guarantee that you will get a second empty seat.
Spirit Airlines offers the option of its Big Front Seat™.
Big Front Seats™ are at the front of Spirit aircraft and offer an additional 6 inches of legroom along with an 18.5-inch seat width and 36-inch pitch.
To purchase these seats, simply select them during seat selection or after boarding, but note that there is a surcharge for these seats. The additional cost ranges from $12 to $250.
When reserving your second seat, you only need to put the name of the person who requires the second seat twice. You don't have to make any additional notes.
However, to avoid confusion, you can call Spirit Customer Service to be marked on the reservation later.
Even though it's been four years since our last review of airline plus size policies, Spirit airlines unfortunately still have no information on their seat belt lengths.
You can request a seat belt extender unless you are sitting in a seat with an inflatable seat belt.
An inflatable seat belt usually has an airbag or flotation device built into it. Seats to avoid if you need a seat belt extender are:

Start by searching for your date, departure and destination. Before selecting your flight, you can see each option for time, stopovers, etc. In these options, you will see "Flight Details"

Budget airlines can be extremely attractive to many travelers, including us.
However, with budget airlines come many hidden or additional fees. Spirit Airlines is no different. For example, there are four different costs for luggage depending on when you need or want to pay.
Seat Assignment:
Choosing your own seat is an additional charge for Spirit. Starting at $1 extra and up to $50 for standard economy seating, you can choose where you want to sit instead of having a randomly assigned seat at spirit airlines.
Boarding pass:
A word of warning… check in online and print your boarding pass at home or have it emailed to you.
If you would like a paper copy of your boarding pass, Spirit Airlines charges for a paper copy; $2 per pass at the check-in kiosk in front of the check-in counter or $10 per pass at the counter.
Priority board:
Want to make sure you have enough time to board your flight without feeling rushed? Spirit offers priority boarding for an additional cost of $6
Unlike Delta, United or American Airlines, Spirit charges for inflight snacks.
Please see the current snack menu for more information on specials and combo packages.
