## American Airlines Policy for Plus Size Travelers
**We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.**

If a customer needs additional space outside of a single seat to travel safely, another seat is required. We encourage customers to address all seating needs when making a reservation.
* When you call to make a reservation, Reservations will make sure you get 2 adjacent seats at the same rate.
* If you did not reserve an extra seat in advance, ask an airport agent to find out if there are 2 adjoining seats available.
* You may be offered a seat in a higher class of service which may provide more space; in this case, you will be responsible for the fare difference.
If accommodations cannot be made on your original flight, you may purchase seats on a different flight at the same price as your original seats.
American Airlines is one of my favorite domestic airlines, I'm not sure if it's just nostalgia when I fly with them or if it's just the fact that I've always found the seats comfortable, but when it comes to their policy for plus size travelers great I definitely think differently.
**In 2018, we launched Plus Size Airline Policies. Since then, a lot has changed in the travel industry.**
With more information becoming available and more influencers talking about traveling as a plus-size person, we wanted to bring you more in-depth and up-to-date content.
### Policy for Overweight Passengers
Like many other airlines, American Airlines (AA) states that "if a customer's body extends more than 1 inch beyond the outer edge of the armrest and a seat belt extension is needed, another seat is required."
* Since most people don't carry a ruler and many fat people don't need a seat belt extender, this policy can make it difficult and embarrassing for many travelers when it should be applied.
* In my personal experience, you may need a seatbelt extender and never extend it to a seat next to you, but you may also have the opposite depending on how it's built.
* In these cases, travelers can request that a flight attendant be transferred if possible or AA will ask the passenger to take a different flight with the purchase of a second seat.
* Unlike Southwest, AA does not offer a refund on the purchase of a second seat for larger passengers.
### Can you get a second courtesy seat?
If a flight is not full, you can request to be moved to a seat with an empty adjacent seat for more space.
* You may be offered a larger seat in a higher class if there are no free seats available. Just know that you will be responsible for the cost difference on these seats.
* However, if your flight is full, don't expect a free second seat option or an upgrade. This is when planning ahead can save you frustration and money.
**Buying a second seat**
If you choose to purchase a second seat for your flight, AA encourages you to call to make your reservations instead of purchasing online.
**To reserve your seats you can**
An agent will help you through the process and make sure you have 2 adjacent seats at the same rate.

## What is a client size policy?
A customer sizing policy is a set of guidelines that airlines implement to ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers. These policies generally refer to passengers who are plus size and require more space to be comfortable.
## American Airlines Customer Sizing Policy
American Airlines' COS policy states that an additional seat is required if a customer needs additional space outside of an individual seat to travel safely. Customers should ensure that all seating needs are addressed when making a reservation.
* Reservations will ensure that you get 2 adjacent seats at the same rate when you call.
* If you did not reserve an extra seat in advance, ask an airport agent about adjacent seats if you do not have an extra seat reserved.
* There is a possibility that you will be offered a seat in a higher class of service that provides more space; in this case, you will be responsible for the fare difference.
* If you are unable to make accommodations on your original flight, you can purchase seats on a different flight for the same price as your original seats.

## Delta Airlines Customer Sizing Policy
Per Delta policy, passengers must be able to secure the seat belt with an extension and lower both armrests. Passengers who do not meet these conditions will be defined as "size passengers" and must comply with alternative seating requirements. This usually means reserving a second seat.
