American Airlines is one of my favorite domestic airlines, I'm not sure if it's just nostalgia when I fly with them or if it's just the fact that I've always found the seats comfortable, but when it comes to their policy for plus size travelers great I definitely think differently.

### Policy for Overweight Passengers
Like many other airlines, American Airlines (AA) states that "if a customer's body extends more than 1 inch beyond the outer edge of the armrest and a seat belt extension is needed, another seat is required."

* Since most people don't carry a ruler and many fat people don't need a seat belt extender, this policy can make it difficult and embarrassing for many travelers when it should be applied.
* In my personal experience, you may need a seatbelt extender and never extend it to a seat next to you, but you may also have the opposite depending on how it's built.
* In these cases, travelers can request that a flight attendant be transferred if possible or AA will ask the passenger to take a different flight with the purchase of a second seat.
* Unlike Southwest, AA does not offer a refund on the purchase of a second seat for larger passengers.

### Can you get a second courtesy seat?
If a flight is not full, you can request to be moved to a seat with an empty adjacent seat for more space.

* You may be offered a larger seat in a higher class if there are no free seats available. Just know that you will be responsible for the cost difference on these seats.
* However, if your flight is full, don't expect a free second seat option or an upgrade. This is when planning ahead can save you frustration and money.

## American Airlines Customer Sizing Policy
American Airlines' COS policy states that an additional seat is required if a customer needs additional space outside of an individual seat to travel safely. Customers should ensure that all seating needs are addressed when making a reservation.

* Reservations will ensure that you get 2 adjacent seats at the same rate when you call.
* If you did not reserve an extra seat in advance, ask an airport agent about adjacent seats if you do not have an extra seat reserved.
