- Previous meeting recap
- Thank you if you contributed to the TeachOSM reflections exercise! If you didn't get a chance to put your thoughts down, [here](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Jb6ZXA8XX6U2G2Cg5pVaoId6j1SV2sd51G7vgXXj8i4/edit?usp=sharing) is the doc
- New Zoom links coming for future meetings! Forget all that you knew about this current Zoom link...
- You should submit a proposal for State of the Map US!
- [Conference website](https://openstreetmap.us/events/state-of-the-map-us/2025/) (June 19-21, 2025)
- If you're unsure, join the SotM US info session at [Mapping USA](https://openstreetmap.us/events/mapping-usa/2025/)!
- What are everyone's thoughts on hosting a poster session at State of the Map US?
- Sneak peak: OSM US is relaunching the old TeachOSM Collaboration Grants under a new OSM US & TeachOSM Microgrant Program!
- Continue thinking about this "starter pack" idea
### Collective Notes
- Welcome Annaca!
- SotM US scholarships are meant for anyone!
- SotM US poster session thoughts
- Richard attended a poster session where the posters were in the same space where people took breaks at SotM in Florence
- The posters were still out even if creators were not there to present
- https://2022.stateofthemap.org/posters/
- Bill - set max dimensions of the poster
- Richard thinks it's a good idea
- Bill - what about an education working group panel at SotM US?
- Steven - or a birds of a feather session
- Bill talked about his experience as a prior TeachOSM Collaboration Grantee
- Bill - education speed dating at SotM US?
- Mel seconded this speed dating idea! "What's your favorite activity in the classroom?" was an introductory question
- Bill offered to help facilitate this!
- Celeste - is this geared towards high school, college students, etc? Not all educators may be knowledgeable enough about OSM to participate
- Bill - maybe a panel better facilitates people asking questions. Steven's not jazzed about a panel idea, wants to better promote dialogue
- Something to keep in mind: how do we allow this track to be open-ended/adaptable to the questions people want to ask, and still keep it accessible to newcomers?
- Richard - in the first day having an OSM 101 for all different types of users. Identify where you go for help
- Steven - hosting a 15 minute intro to OSM for teachers
- Celeste - there are two layers: how to use, and how you use/apply it. Start with the what/why, go to the how
- Mel - Richmond SotM US: workshops were not very focused on education or how to check edits, made good connections
- Steven: Consortium between TeachOSM, AGS, YouthMappers to create content/starter pack?? Put it on the next agenda! And a TeachOSM in person meeting in June!

- Thinking about the TeachOSM Sandbox
- How many sandboxes do you envision using?
- one per class x2
- one per semester x1
- Would you want an empty sandbox? Or one that has pre-existing data?
- pre-populated
- interest in copying a previous sandbox from the past
- using sandboxes to show example lessons to students/educators, and then folks can create their own
- like a tutorial, with a scenario, story, and why
- examples from past humanitarian mapping efforts
- problems and solutions in the real world

- Interested in piloting the **TeachOSM Sandbox**? Reach out to [Alyssa](alyssa@openstreetmap.us)!
### New Stuff - Tasking Manager Onboarding
- If you don't have access to the TeachOSM Tasking Manager, reach out to Alyssa or Steven and they will send you a form to complete!
- You can select three roles:
- Mappers
- Validators (for repeat mappers)
- Project Managers (best for teachers)
- Tips:
- Create a task that can be completed in 15 minutes or less, so the mapper can feel accomplished!
- If you are mapping roads, waterways, or land use you likely need larger task sizes and more experienced mappers
- Buildings and pedestrian infrastructure make good, smaller tasks
- You can break squares into smaller portions if an area is very dense
- You can specificy the imagery you want to use to make sure it is recent (and copy available imagery URLs from JOSM)
- To adjust imagery offset, you can either give instructions to adjust offset to your mappers or choose the best imagery and adjust yourself after the fact
- **Reach out to Steven if you want a template for instructions or additional instructional documents!**
- The long description supports markdown, so you can add additional formatting, links, and other context
- TEST your project imagery, task boundary, time/difficulty, and changeset comment!
- You can make the project private to just your organization
- You can clone your project to make setup easier in the future! The only thing that doesn't copy is the area of interest.
- Questions/Comments:
- Keep your task size and area managable so mappers can see progress!
- Discreet, smaller features like benches, pedestrian infrastructure, bike racks, etc. can be great for students

* Availability of Hashtags? interface to add will be there, and will be in the edits. But since they're not on OSM, won't be visible.
* Seeing results? Sandbox holds the data, but not analyze. Can download the data and use another tool (OSMCha?) to sum results.
* Templates can be used/reused. Create case studies to be used as lesson plans.
