So population itself currently is not sustainable. We have way to many people on this planet and our earths carrying capacity has been exceeded. Since its already been exceeded we cant do much about it unless we cut down our population by a massive amount. We can't really do that since its very unethical. So, to answer how populations ties with sustainability is by being to much stressful on earth.
