--- tags: JC2066 --- # JC2066 Group project ## Drone traffic control ![](https://i.imgur.com/YhInjDI.png) ### Background Traffic control in intersections and generally all crossroads had always been a problem - Dangerous - Wastes pedestrians' and drivers time ### Existing solutions 3 - color Traffic lights - Stupid, traffic light duration is fixed - Doesn't stop people ignoring red lights Letting pedestrians press a button to speed up traffic light change - Hygiene issues Sensors on traffic light poles (e.g. In Hong Kong) > [Smart Traffic Control System](https://www.lscm.hk/eng/channel.php?channel=Case-STCS) - Small coverage, not enough for mass, smart and accurate prediction algorithms ### OUR Solution ![](https://i.imgur.com/PJVcwLd.jpg) - Inspried by the Mexican crimefighting drones mentioned by Professor Ho - Have drones up super high in the air - Ultra high resolution camera - Monitor every single intersection and crossroads - Completely capture the traffic condition in a large area - Massive amount of data input vs mere sensors on little traffic light poles - Allows a traffic flow prediction algorithm to dynamically change the traffic lights ON THE SCALE OF A FUCKING CITY - Computer Vision - Automatically identify people that disobeys traffic lawas - e.g. Ignoring red light, - Focus on the target car - Follows the target car - Drone doesn't have to move, just switch between cameras of different drones - Saves the last known location - Send a cropped out video file to the police department ### Potential Challenges - High maintenance cost - Moving parts need to be inspected and replaced - Low uptime - Needs to recharge - Crossroads / Intersections under bridges - Unable to capture areas that are invisible to bird's eye view cameras
