## Developing pattern languages is not a well established 'mode'. Without a supportive authoring / publishing/ engagement environment, people end up writing in more established modes.
Pattern Language is a different mode of knowledge - perhaps 'structured scientific wisdom'.
As with all forms of knowledge, the medium through which it is developed / conveyed and engaged with is crucial to its full development (Mcluhan - *The medium **is** the message*).
The medium - to begin with - seems likely to be [patterns](/yRWHa6SvS4uC1K4kliF71A), expressed as text and images, with a broadly ['Alexandrian' structure](/68Rok4BPSNiuZqgDkffFdA), as linked hypertexts.
Dynamic modelling and formats for other knowledge modes will need consideration.
##### Therefore:
## Seek to develop and refine a pattern language development environment
Such an environment needs to support (in order of need):
**Minimum viable** NB: this is all that is envisaged at present:
- loose, sketchy development of patterns in a free-form way, but which neverthlesess encourages and maintains structure
- wiki-like instantiation of new pages (encourages/supports keeping patterns discrete)
- publishing of patterns at all stages of development (specifically to encourage the publication of speculative, stub, sketch and outline patterns for community engagement
- publishing 'schema' including building of index pages for navigation
**For future consideration**
- group membrances with authoring permissions
