# PIMS Jobs Committee Meetings
## October 19, 2022
### Agenda:
- Overview of goals of PIMS Industry/Academy programs
- Proposed restructuring of Jobs Committee
- Discussion & Next Steps
### Goals of PIMS Industry/Academy Programs
The mandate of PIMS is
- to promote research in and applications of the mathematical sciences of the highest international caliber
- to facilitate the training of highly qualified personnel at the graduate and postdoctoral level
- to create an equitable, diverse and inclusive community in the mathematical sciences
- to enrich public awareness of mathematics through outreach
- to enhance the mathematical training of teachers and students in K-12
- to create mathematical partnerships with similar organizations in other countries, with a particular focus on Latin America and the Pacific Rim.
Particular goals of the PIMS Industry portfolio are to promote research & applications of mathematical sciences in Industry, NFP sector and Government (ING), and to facilitate the training of HQP who wish to seek employment in ING. Occassionally this involves enriching awareness of mathematical sciences in ING, and EDI practices are important to PIMS Industry programs (and all PIMS programs).
#### Activities which support HQP seeking employment in industry
1. Math to Power Industry Workshop
2. Math to Power Quantum
3. Job Fairs/Career Hub
In addition, PIMS will very likely support a number of Data Science bootcamps (BC Data, USask DS Bootcamp) and other skill-building workshops through "normal" channels.
#### Activites which support Industry/Community seeking employees who are highly skilled in mathematical sciences
1. Connexion Talent (embargoed); Data Science Upskilling.
2. Support for Mitacs applications
#### Activities which support researchers seeking community/industry problems or partnerships
1. Optimal Transport (embargoed)
2. Conferences, workshops, CRG programs which involve industry components.
3. Seminar series
In order to succeed in building PIMS capacity to support HQP, Researchers and ING Community partners (Industry, NFP, Goverment) I need to be able to make *informed* decisions which promote the best interests of all three groups.
### Proposal for Restructuring of Jobs Committee
I suggest replacing the Jobs Committee with an *ING Advisory Panel* consisting of ING Community partners and applied and/or industrial mathematicians who can advise:
- Are PIMS education programs delivering the right skill sets for industry needs?
- Are PIMS scientific programs creating good opportunities for researchers in academia and ING alike?
- Help with network connections to new partners/programs/jobs.
The ING Advisory Panel will meet fairly infrequently (once per quarter?). Potential models for agendas:
January meeting:
- Presentations by successful SRP applicants whose applications seek ING collaboration
- Following each presentation, discussion about connections/opportunites
March meeting:
- Presentation of content of PIMS training programs
- Discussion of whether this meets industry needs
- etc.
In addition, I will occassionally need small, nimble, efficient organizing committees for events like M2PI & related activities. Member of the organizing commitees will be invited to relevant ING Advisory panel meetings.
### Discussion Highlights:
- An industry panel needs to have a specific mandate.
- We need the mandate to include being *champions* for math (in industry) as well as getting *advice* from industry which has deep math problems.
- A narrower focus is better than a broader focus (perhaps narrowly math, broadly cross-sectorial?)
- Everyone likes the virtual seminar idea
- Consider trying to get representation from HR - in the end they have funds/approval. They know how to govern IP.
- But we don't need an HR person to help with skills/hiring - Amazon, NVidia, Google hiring plans are pretty open and include relevant skills
- Be careful to engage the panel at least once BEFORE asking for input - it takes them a while to be able to offer good advice!
# Proposed Terms of Reference for the ING Advisory Panel
## Mandate:
The mandate of the ING Advisory panel is
- to promote research in and applications of mathematical science pertaining to industry
- to facilitate the training of HQP at the graduate and postdoctoral for HQP who plan to seek internships or employment in ING
- to enrich public awareness of mathematics in ING
- to create an equitable, diverse and inclusive community of mathematical scientists
## Membership
The chair of the ING Advisory panel is the PIMS Co-Director, Industry. The ING Advisory panel also consists of
- up to 5 members representing industry, the NFP sector or government sectors [Suggested initial committee: Matt MacDonald, Megan Dewar, William Spat, one ATCO representative, one Praires representative]
- up to 5 members representing academia [Suggested initial committee: Allen Herman, Jolen Galaugher, ]
- up to 2 members respresenting PIMS
## Member terms
Normally, members serve terms of two years. The terms will be staggered (this will require us to offer some initial 3 year terms).
## Responsibilities of Members
Members are expected to:
- Familiarize themselves with the roles of the Committee and the Council, and these Terms of Reference.
- Come to meetings prepared to engage in respectful, meaningful discussion and provide considered, constructive and thoughtful feedback and commentary, express opinions and ask questions to enable the Panel to exercise its best judgment in advising PIMS.
## Role
The ING Advisory Panel serves as PIMS’s advisory body on the PIMS operations pertaining to engaging partners in industry, government or the not-for-profit sector. The Panel reviews and provides recommendations regarding funding priorities, strategies, plans and policies for the PIMS, and provides a forum for discussion, information sharing and approval of recommendations to the PIMS Directorate or other external decision-makers.
## RESPONSIBILITIES
The Panel will fulfill its role primarily by carrying out the activities enumerated below. The listed responsibilities shall be the common, recurring activities of the Panel; however, the Panel may carry out additional responsibilities and duties within its role. The Panel's primary responsibilities are as follows:
1. Determine the programs of study for M2PI and other PIMS industry training activites;
2. Upon request of the scientific leadership of PIMS events, review industry-facing events and provide advice on the adminstration of these activities to enhance their success;
3. Facilitate networking between PIMS scientists and community members in industry, government or not-for-profit sectors - especially by disseminating information about PIMS opportunites;
4. Such other activities and responsibilities delegated or assigned to it by the PIMS Directorate or brought to it by the Chair from time to time.
## Meetings
The ING Advisory panel shall normally meet virtually three times per year. Meetings are held in the third week of the months prescribed in the following schedule. The regular meeting topics are as follows:
- January meeting: Overview of PIMS ING-facing activities for the academic year which will begin in the following September. Advisory panel selects activities which they would like to review in more detail.
- April: PIMS Scientists are invited to present their plans to industry panel in detail; panel provides information or advice on programs
- September: Review of curricula for PIMS training activities.
Materials for review will be distributed to the Advisory panel at least one week in advance of planned meetings. A list of invited guests will be distributed at the same time. The Advisory Panel may request additional guest be invited to the meeting.
