Present: Tom Arnold (TA), Andrew Nelson (AN), Max Skoda (MS), Ben Humphreys (BH), Brian Maranville (BBM), Jos Cooper (JC), Andrew McCluskey (AM), Maciej Jankowski (MJ), Sophie Ayscough (AS) Apologies: Stefan Kowarik (SK) # Agenda ## 1. Review previous minutes and assign a note taker - [ ] ACTION (everyone) to update what happened at the Grenoble workshop on the webpage (https://www.reflectometry.org/workshops/workshop_2024/), make past tense and add conclusions. - [ ] ACTION (JC) Upload photos to github. - [ ] ACTION TA & JC to update the survey & distribute - [x] ACTION AN to ask Wojtek how to sign Windows executables. - [ ] Update on OSCAR call for grants w.r.t FAIR data. https://oscars-project.eu/open-calls. ### Updates - MS has some notes, but not clear where to add them. (Add them to --> https://github.com/reflectivity/reflectivity.github.io/blob/master/workshops/workshop_2024/index.md) - TA recommends that a meeting report is not necessary, but workshop page to should be modified to be in past tense with conclusions. - TA and JC have updated the survey and it has been sent out. - No follow up cause not enough content. - Tim Snow did not want the fact that ISA can sign software on the website (but can be communicated via a news email). - AN Signing process involves Tim generating a certificate and getting added to a developer organisation. - AN Piotr Rozyczko can help for Windows signing but ESS paid for Sasview Windows signing certificate - ARM The two methods for code signing (apple vs windows) are complex and different, software is awful, long live the command line. - MS Mantid developers might be able to advise on how to do it. - MJ ESRF cannot participate in OSCAR call, they got money the last call so are barred (more than 250 k EUR) - There is a plan to submit a proposal for reciprocal space remapping (not lead by ESRF, lead by Francesco Carla @ Diamond) but maybe ORSO should get involved (data formats?). - Try to stay aware of their work so that overlaps are leveraged as well as possible. - Philip Mousley at Diamond might be involved so can ask him also. - Should we try and get a ORSOpy developer for a few years? (ARM) - Need to check eligable facilities (https://oscars-project.eu/projects), ones with less then 250 k EUR existing. ## 2. AGM at SXNS. ### Planning Online? - Remote seems like a good idea. - AN worth catching up at ICNS? - Could we have a code camp (physical location)? - This would be a nice idea for ORSOpy which is quite slow on the development cycle. - When Sasview do this, facilities pay - A bit of a half-baked idea (TA), someone else's problem if they wanna do it ## 3. Reports from working groups ### Analysis WG - AN Updates to the workshop pages is complete. - Wider development group for Refl1D -- code camp with ISIS and ORNL people (@ ORNL). - Lots of different perspectives. - Trying to make a full release with new web interface. Too many cooks makes the soup take longer to prepare... - Some ISIS effort to add nested sampling to Refl1D ### EnO WG - TA meeting with Stefan occasionally. - ORSO could be a good opportunity for feedback for ISIS user committee. - TA collating information from the user committee's via Slack. - Share information about the existence of these committees. - See above about the lack of newsletter. ### Reproducibility WG - No updates. Maciej Jankowski and I (ARM) need to set up a standing meeting. - ARM takes blame for this, or rather blames University of Bristol. - MJ is developing a package to improve data reduction/cleaning of data. - Might be of interest (https://joss.theoj.org/papers/10.21105/joss.04397), probably a lot simpler than what ID10 is implementing. - This project is somehow links to EOSC-something. - Does this write .ort files? - Bruker might **look at** adding .ort writing cause ESS is buying an instrument from them. Money talks. ### Data formats WG - MS and JC met earlier this week. - Next steps: .ort format is reasonably complete. - Can we push the implementation of the simple ASCII model definition? - This will require an automated way to describe samples. - For interest: this was the thing that JC and ARM were talking about (https://github.com/reflectivity/orsopy/pull/132#discussion_r1838369597) - How do Refl1D and refnx handle the sample input from the ort file? - ARM thinks that GenX is the only one that handles it. - Refl1D definitely doesn't look at the units of the columns during import (BBM) - https://github.com/reflectometry/refl1d/issues/226 - MS will only be giving out .ort files, .txt is dead, long live .ort! - Old motofit cannot load an ort file. motofit is dead, long live refnx? - Should ORSOpy have opinions on units? - Unit conversions are hard! - Should there be an internal to ORSOpy unit standard (ARM says no cause this adds additional complexity to ORSOpy) - Correction: ORSOpy does depend on `pint` (sorry BBM). ### Sample environment WG - SA and BH had a meeting about "How to get started!" - Main aim is to have a list of available sample environments that are at the different facilities with some information about the sample enviroment. - SA has started to build up a excel-style spreadsheet with information about solid-liquid flow cells and langmuir troughs. - Should we have email details? - No, link to facility webpage (i.e., if the sample environment is at Diamond I07, link to the I07 webpage) - SA spoke with Andy Church to ask about what the ISIS Sample Environment are happy to share: - Pictures, diagrams and photos - For now the table is great! - SA will write out a few examples written out and then crowdsource the work. - Build towards a ORSO webpage with background on what a given sample environment is "i.e., what is a solid liquid cell". - (ARM) can the background stuff be on the "learn" pages? - (TA) adding stuff to the "learn" pages is not clear - ARM will add some documentation links to the JupyterBook information - BH the need for a sample environment library is needed cause problems between ILL and ISIS cause the ILL cryofurnace is better (according to a user). - BH has contacted Jana from SwissNeutronics to get some blocks polished? - This is a new option for block polishing. The "current mod" that the ILL use are not great. - AN rates some Polish polishers (Polish polish). - AN ANSTO has a sample environment book, but the soft matter samples environments are often a bit hacked together (NormSpecials). How do these get caught by the plan. - The aim is to capture the more general designs and then cataloguing that the NormSpecials exist would be a good development. ## AOB Date of the next meeting: **23rd January 15:00 CET**
