# Engaging OSM - online session (SOTM2022) ## Optional introductions - Who are you (osm name or in person), where are you, and what does OSM mean to you? * Donal Hunt (osm username: [dónal](https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/d%C3%B3nal)), OSM Ireland - attending virtually from Cork, Ireland. I am a big advocate for open data and love contributing data to the project. * pronunciation of my name: https://forvo.com/word/d%C3%B3nal/ (either version is good depending on the desired accent you're aiming for!) * Gavin Chait - I am an open data scientist leading development of data-driven software services, research and consulting in socio-economic development, and researching methodology for improving data collection, analysis and publication ([@Whythawk.com](https://whythawk.com)). * Nat Proudfoot (OSM username: natfoot [Natfootl](https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Natfoot) OSM US, attending from Seattle, WA. Active mapping Railways, Seamark, and Open Historical Map. Want to become a data consumer and communication is key. Active with the OSM US Goverment Working Group * * x * Liz Barry (OSM username: LizBarry. Pronouns: She/her), Los Angeles California. Bio: mapper, facilitator. * * "Elizabeth" * * * x * * x * x * x * x * x * ## 1. What inspires you or would inspire you to play a role in OSM working groups, boards, committees, chapters, and meetups? What motivates you to get involved in OSM (specifically in how we organize)? * DH: Supporting the community to have maximum impact. My motivation is that there is lots of low hanging fruit that are easy to support and that then helps the community(ies) tackle the larger problems. * I was one of the founding members of the local chapter. The goals at the time were to enable the communinity to tap into supports from government organisations and corporations. It also gives us a more formal "entity" to engage with others (before the local chapter was formed it was hard to describe "who are you?" when contributors engaged other entities - "a bunch of people who love maps" would result in odd looks). * listening to the board ama earlier, I see some parallels with what the board of the chapter end up doing. the local chapter board end up doing things that no-one wants to do. * other things that spring to mind: * motivating the community to deliver impact. e.g. mapping all the townlands in ireland (done), mapping all the buildings in Ireland (in progress). * providing support for contributors (e.g. compute resources) * doing the grungy work of bringing people and organisations together. laying the groundwork for things * providing opportunities for the community to meet (virtually, in person, etc) * building bridges with tool creators, osmf, other chapters, etc * I am on a goverment working group for OSM US. Mostly from a working project to map railway tunnels for the Federal Railroad Administration. I am active all over the place in mapping. * * Liz kitemapping, restaurants in Brooklyn, mappknitter * * * I have been involved in OSM since 2015. And what brings me to OSM is the possibility to localise a place without asking the way. I didn't think that is was possible in my country Benin. Countribute directly use the data later was great for me. * * * x * * * x * * * x * * * x * * x ## 2. How can we be more diverse, equitable, and inclusive in all our spaces, especially how we organize? And, who organizes? * x * diversity and collection is something that I have looked. * * To be more inclusive. You need to diversify the language I know a lot of people in OSM who doesn't speak english but they have a lot of thinks in term of skill for our organisation * * lots of silos of informatoin and communictaion - it crosses social communication and languages - the same info may not be accessible the same way to everyone * * x * For example during Wikimedia session, they give the possibility of translation at the same Time when people are talking. Do you see my point ? * * x * *simulataneous translation - Black lives use conference calls to hear the content in a different language - 3 languages - team of 6 - labour/work plan is important g0v - use hackpad notes to help in translation.link at the top with bilingual people write in a different language - lot of labour. * * * x * * * x * * x ## 3. How can we learn about our shared network and build momentum in participation /engagement and leadership? Do you have any examples from other communities? do you have any examples from other open communities that we can learn from? * x * Nat Proudfoot: discovering that tags are used one way in one subcommunity, and slightly differently in another subcommunity. Not quite as the original purpose of the tag was. Example: `industrial=*` applies to `landuse` and also has application to `railways` * HL: taxonomy matters and there are cultural/time differences. * NP: exploring litemapping / lightmapping which is not yet standardized. * * transitions over time, continuity * archiving and memory - is a collective task * how can we build memory system * even joining to participate is a language barrier * * * x * * * x * * * x * * * x * * * x * * x v ## Guest Speaker- Liz Barry How we organize and engagement in community coordinating work making sense resolving conflict deciding All the community items in a community. how to relate to each other as individuals. establishing a vision together who defines the questions - citizen science and/or community science how to transform - be welcoming, and transform and embrace new ideas public lab - organized to focus on 'new people welcoming' that is where the energy governing - how to manage conflict https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sociocracy Re: newcomers, maybe of interest to some is how Public Lab's code community is structured: https://code.publiclab.org/ can we improve "OSM "notes" to lower the barrier to join What about people that dont want to be a mapper but want to help with information on the map?... Maybe creating Notes... What are the "bridges" to help them "help us"? :-) Where do people work on welcoming newcomers in OSM? ##Q and A * Natfoot: I have been thinking about community. I have also been thinking about how to making regular contributions without direct mapping. Even if this is through other means from photos, to comments(Notes?), to other not thought of contributions. Data as a whole depends on the user and translating data for the map. This is a barrier to contribution. heather response - thanks. we do need to think about how to support this. * Reduce or remove opratunities to use achronyms. Any achronym is an opratunity to have a social or political block from knowladge. Example: DWG.
