The origin of fashion may be traced to ancient Greece and Rome, which were known for their draped clothing, flowing togas, and elaborately carved sandals. Gladiator armour can be infused with components that call to mind legendary monsters. Amulets, rings, and brooches can be made from diamonds that shine within, elaborate patterns of mythical creatures, or tiny reproductions of potent objects from other worlds. This fusion creates a visually alluring and entrancing apparel and armour look while also embracing the endless possibilities of fantasy. It also honours the beauty of old civilizations. ![](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/rJ1VpMFHn.png) ***Moodboard :*** ![](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/r1p-8GtS3.jpg) >In order to demonstrate how I might incorporate this cultural trend with the element of fantasy, I needed a visual representation of greece and roman armour, therefore I made this moodboard. ***Moodboard Breakdown:*** ![](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/BkBgcMYS2.png) >Roman and Greek gladiator cultures can offer a feeling of antiquity, strength, and visual intrigue to fantasy character designs. Here are some examples of how to build fantasy-based characters using clothing and armour from different cultures: - **Gladiator Armor :** I can take drawing inspiration from the classic armour worn by Roman gladiators, such as their distinct helmet designs (such as the Gallic or Thracian helmets) and their powerful cuirasses (chest plates), which were frequently embellished with ornamentation. Adapt these components to your fantasy world's design by adding exotic themes or objects made of charmed metals. - **Tunics and Drapes :** Gladiators in ancient Rome and Greece frequently wore linen or wool tunics and draperies. These outfits could be altered to fit your fantasy world, adding intricate designs, eye-catching hues, and distinctive fabric textures to symbolise the character's history or magical prowess. - **Leather Accessories :** Leather bracelets, sandals, and belts would all be worn by gladiators. You might get ideas from these accessories and make embellished versions with fantastical components. To improve their beauty, think of including fine engravings, precious stones, or mystical sigils. - **Weapons and Shields :** Gladiators employed a variety of weapons and shields and were proficient in different fighting techniques. While keeping their essence, modify this historical weaponry to suit your fantasy world. For instance, you may make more magical or elaborate versions of conventional Roman gladius swords, Greek hoplons, or net and trident combos using enchantment. - **Symbolism and Heraldry :** Gladiator games were associated with specific emblems and heraldry in both the Roman and Greek cultures. Use these symbols to indicate the character's allegiance, personality, or abilities while creating your fantasy characters. You can design distinctive emblems or crests with a fantastical twist that are based on Roman or Greek themes. - **Inspirational Mythology :** Gladiator culture was frequently entwined with Roman and Greek mythology. Include mythical beings or characters from various mythologies in the designs of your characters. For instance, you may design a character from the tale of Hercules or a centaur gladiator. >Fantasy character design allows for creative licence, so I can use both historically accurate details and fantastical features. Making aesthetically arresting characters that fit in with both the ancient world and the fantasy scenario you've imagined is the aim. ### <mark><ins>****Medieval Culture**** ***How can we incorporate Medieval styled fashion and armour with fantasy based element :*** Incorporating mediaeval attire and armour into fantasy character designs provides an enthralling opportunity to bring the appeal and majesty of a bygone age into the realm of the imagination. Mediaeval attire's rich details, sophisticated craftsmanship, and distinct silhouettes can be reinterpreted to create unique and visually stunning individuals. The rich tapestry of historical fashion can be drawn upon for inspiration, such as flowing robes, belted bodices, and voluminous sleeves, while incorporating fantasy aspects such as ethereal fabrics, fascinating designs, and brilliant colour schemes. Furthermore, mediaeval armour provides an opportunity to instil power and resilience in characters by combining the utility of historical armour with imaginative decorations such as elaborate engravings, magical runes, or mystical gemstones. Fantasy character designs can evoke a sense of wonder, mystery, and romanticism from a bygone era by mixing mediaeval costumes and armour. ![](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/r1TzWQFBn.jpg) ***Moodboard:*** >In order to demonstrate how I might incorporate this cultural trend with the element of fantasy, I needed a visual representation of Medeival armour, therefore I made this moodboard. ![](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/SJOsxQYr2.jpg) ***Moodboard Breakdown:*** ![](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/S1DCrQtS3.png) >Incorporating mediaeval attire and armour into fantasy character designs can give depth, authenticity, and visual appeal to your projects. Here are some ways to make the most of these historical influences: - **Medieval Culture :** By researching various mediaeval cultures, such as European England. Investigating their attire, armour designs, and cultural aesthetics. This research will lay the groundwork for designing authentic and diverse fantasy characters. - **Identify Key Elements :** Look for distinguishing aspects of medieval clothing and armour that attract your eye. Take into account silhouettes, fabrics, colours, patterns, and decorative themes. Take notice of individual armour parts such as helmets, gauntlets, breastplates, and greaves, as well as one-of-a-kind accessories such as belts, pouches, and jewellery. - **Adaptation and Fantasy Twist :** Then it's time to adapt and incorporate fantasy aspects into the creation. Consider your character's setting, society, and role. Incorporate magical or fantasy aspects such as elaborate enchantments, mythological creatures, or supernatural abilities. This enables me to achieve a balance between historical truth and imaginative creativity. - **Symbolism and Storytelling :** Use clothes and armour as storytelling devices. Include symbolic items that reflect your character's personality, history, or role in the story. Certain colours, symbols, or patterns, for example, can symbolise allegiance, rank, or magical affinity. Allow these visual cues to strengthen the bond between your characters and their surroundings. - **Practicality and Functionality :** I need to consider the functionality and practicality of my ideas, particularly for armour. While fantasy aspects can be included, it is critical that the armour be believable and provide enough protection. To create designs that are visually appealing and plausible within the context of your fantasy world, balance aesthetics with utility. - **Iteration and Refinement :** Iteration is essential in the design process. Making several variants of my character designs, and experimenting with various combinations of mediaeval clothing and armour. Based on comments and your own aesthetic sensibilities, refine my designs. >Medieval civilizations might provide influence, the end goal is to develop distinctive and fascinating fantasy character designs. I need to start with historical influences and allow my imagination to run wild to bring my characters to life in your fantasy realm. ### <mark><ins>****Arab / Middle Eastern Culture**** ***How can we incorporate arab and middle eastern fashion and clothing with fantasy based elements :*** By incorporating Arab and Middle Eastern attire and warrior armour into fantasy-based character designs, a rich and diversified portrayal of cultures, aesthetics, and historical influences is achieved. Traditional Arab clothing, such as flowing abayas and thobes, can be used to provide an attractive and regal touch to a character's wardrobe. Their attire might contain beautiful needlework, brilliant colours, and intricate patterns, representing the region's rich tradition. The traditional maille, lamellar, or plate armour can be recreated into warrior armour with aspects reminiscent of Arabian and Middle Eastern cultures. Curved and elaborate designs, references to calligraphy or geometric themes, and the use of exquisite filigree work are examples of this. The incorporation of these fashion and armour components not only improves the visual attractiveness of the characters but also serves as a celebration of the richness and beauty of Arab and Middle Eastern civilizations within the domain of fantasy fiction. ![](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/r1L9i7KBh.jpg) ***Moodboard:*** ![](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/SyNH1VtH2.jpg) >In order to demonstrate how I might incorporate this cultural trend with the element of fantasy, I needed a visual representation of arab and middle eastern, therefore I made this moodboard. ***Moodboard Breakdown:*** ![](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/Sk9yvVtrh.png) >Using clothes and armour from former Arab and Middle Eastern cultures and civilizations to create fantasy-based character designs can be an intriguing and culturally rich approach here are a few ways: - **Research and Study :** Beginning by examining various Arab and Middle Eastern civilizations and historical periods' fashion and armour styles. This is demonstrated by the design's usage of a limited quantity of clothes and armour. The crimson tunics and draperies were used in this design. In this design, I also used the Mini Thracian Gladiator Helmet. For the fantasy components in this design, I created a high fantasy buster sword with a red flame magic aspect. I added a red lighting accent to the fur of the helmet. The design aspects I utilised serve to convince the spectator that this character is not from a wealthy or noble family, but rather from a low-income family struggling to make ends meet. ***Design 2:*** ![](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/ryg0KEKH2.jpg) > My second design was inspired by Greek and Roman military designs and gear. However, using this fantasy aspect design, I constructed and designed the armour all with a high fantasy element in mind. I used the cloaks and drapes seen on Greek and Roman warriors. However, for the helmet, I was inspired by the Roman Imperial Gallic 'Face' Helmet. I utilised a lot of skull symbolism in this design to make it fit into the fantasy theme. Through the use of darker tones and heavier armour and apparel to cover, the design helps to convey to the audience that this character is more of an assassin thype of character. ***Design 3:*** ![](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/Syx19VKBn.jpg) > For my third Roman design I used a lot of rich colours and high nobel Roman armour and attire. For the Roman inspiration I used inspirtation for the clothing attire with the use of rich tunics and draperies. For the fantasy elements within my character design I created a futuristic and fantasy based spear design which has a red lighting flame mage element within the design. I also used this same aspect within the helmets design. Throgh the use of the rich colour tones and the armour and clothing present, it helps to display that the character is from a nobel background and he may be part of a royal guard unit. ### <mark><ins>****Medieval Knight Fantasy Character**** ![](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/SJOsxQYr2.jpg) ***Design 1:*** ![](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/BJ9gHBtHn.jpg) >My first concept for my mediaeval knight fantasy character was heavily influenced by the game Elden Ring and how they utilised mediaeval knight armour from other times and combined it with fantasy aspects. For my design, I was inspired by British knight designs and combined them with fantasy elements. Within the design, I included additional clothing designs such as long wolly capes for the fantasy-based components. With the use of the wooden magic staff, I also incorporated a knight mage element. This design conveys to the viewer that this is a noble mage knight who fights with magic and staffs rather than swords and shields. ***Design 2:*** ![](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/BkrZHrFHh.jpg) > For my second knight design, I was heavily influenced by Warhammer and Overwatch. This is evident in the use of the armour, as I developed a battle hardened battle knight armour. For the design, I used a variety of rich colours and symbol patterns within the character. With this character, I built a magical flame-controlling ability for the fantasy component. Through the use of rich hues and design, this design lets the spectator to see that this character is a high nobel warrior or guardian, and that they use largely magic controlled powers rather than weapons. ### <mark><ins>****Arab / Middle Eastern Fantasy Character**** ![](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/SyNH1VtH2.jpg) ***Design 1:*** ![](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/rJIYDHYrh.jpg) > I drew heavily on games like Prince of Persia for the fantasy-based elements when designing my Arab and middle eastern characters. Rich textiles and clothes from both the past and the present were used to create the character's wardrobe. With the character's design, I also made extensive use of expensive golden jewellery to show how this character might be a wealthy noble prince who has gone wild. This is demonstrated by the choice of dark, stealthy shades, which contribute to the feeling of secrecy and mystique. Black magic was used as an ability that this character may use to represent the fantasy-based components in the design. They can also modify their weapons with the help of this power to add fascinating fire components to their arsenal. --- ## <ins>Bibliography - 10 Time Traveling Video Games to Explore Past and Future (2017).
