# Mentoring Guideline for 2022 Microsoft Mentoring Program ### stages of mentoring 1. Know each other and build relationship in your first meeting 2. End the program and evaluate the effects. #### Know each other and build relationship in your first meeting * Ask some questions... * Background of mentee (skills, experiences,...) * Interests/Hobbies * What's the expectations of mentee for this program? (to know what mentee needs) * Set a schedule for regular meetings * Face-to-face meetings will be better. * Build trust with frequent contacts #### Plan regular meetings * Determine the form of regular meetings (for reference only) * **Lunch/Dinner meeting** * to understand mentee's challenges * to have mock interview for the job application/degree application * **1on1 study group** * assign some materials (or mentee pick materials by themselves) which can be an article, a report, news series, etc. * both share the contents regularly (weekly/biweekly,...) * **Forum** * First, to make a group with other mentors and mentees * choose a **topic** to study * assign some materials (or mentee pick materials by themselves) * mentees take turns to present the contents * discuss the content presented and give some feedbacks * **Virtual Meeting** * You may try to have 1on1 study group or forum remotely with Teams. * Encourage the mentees to take notes of every meeting and record every meeting. * In virtual meetings, it's nice to turn your(and your mentees) camera on. * When possible,have face-to-face meets. * **Group project** * Group project may be good choice for both physical and virtual mentoring * Build a team to do a project from brainstorming to implementation. * Group project goes with a clear goals which makes mentors/mentees more engaged. * Mentees can gain the experience in collaboration with others with different professions. * In every meeting, you can... * Share your knowledge/experiences on mentee's needs and inspire them. * Provide resources for mentee to learn and discuss the content with mentee in next meeting. * Share daily life with each other and chitchat sometimes. (This could help you get close to your mentee) * Help mentee if they encounter some challenges in their life/careers. * Encourage mentee to be active. (ask question actively, share things actively,...) * Topics to talk (for reference only) * Life Experiences * Whether to study/work abroad? * Whether to pursue a graduate degree? * Career Planning * How to choose job(especially the first one)? * The roadmap to ideal jobs and the skill set needed to be built. * Professions * The know-hows/knowledges about your professions. * Daily Life * outdoor activities (hiking, diving,....) * pets (dogs, cats,...) * movies (actors & actresses,...) * Sometimes, you may not be expert on your mentee's needs. * In most of time, the roles of mentor are 'advisor', 'counselor', but not coach. * Keep positive. * Also, seeking help from other colleagues is a good solution. (It's a good chance to make a group) #### Attend events during this program * It's encouraged to attend these events with your mentee. * There are 4 events during this program as follows: * Kickoff :::info * Date & Time: 11/1(Tue.) 12:00\-14:00 * Place: Taipei(CLS) MPR * kickoff agenda * 12:00-12:30 opening * 12:30-13:00 mentor & mentee time * 13:00-13:30 group activity * 13:30-13:50 closing Kickoff provides an opportunity to get closer to your mentee/mentor. Also, you can know other mentors/mentees through group activity in kickoff.
