Moreover, this led me to apply for Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT), a top technology university in Southern Vietnam, after graduated from high school with ranked first in Physic. By giving my best effort, I am qualified to be a student in HCMUT, with major in Automation and Control in Electrical Electronic Engineering department. Course after course in the engineering program take me close to my career goal. With my major, we need more practical work than just study about it. I soon found and started my research with supervision from my advisor, Dr. Pham Viet Cuong, who has a major in Automation and also in Artificial Intelligence (AI). I found out a Student Scientific Research program from our department that has financial support for students who have potential research. I joined with 2 other students to form a team and become one of 5 teams qualified for the sponsor from the university. Our project objective is to apply Speech Processing to a Virtual Assistant (VA) such as Siri from Apple or Google Assistant, in order to enhance its ability to work more effectively under more diverse environments. I also joined many contests from University which results me to an 2nd place in Line Following contest at Department's Foundation Festival. Along with technical work, I also an active person in community activity. As an outsourcing company, they provide us opportunities to work for large projects from other foreign companies. In 2017, I am put in an project with employee from LG Electronic, South Korea with Media Car Monitor project for premium vehicles from Hyundai-Kia Motors Corporation. In 2018, this time is Panasonic from Japan with Homehawk project. Beside working full time at FSoft and completing Final thesis at university, I try to achieve more knowledge and skills by attending as AI collaborators in Intelligence program from Cinnamon AI Lab, Japan, also learned IoT Course from Institute of Artificial Intelligence of FPT University. By the time working for a big company like FSoft, I have learned many valuable skills and quite amount of experience. I have great confidence that I could find a stable job after graduation but this not my career goal. MHMC laboratory at NCKU become my suitable choice for me since it got a perfect environment for anyone who has an interest in Natural Language Processing (NLP) research. The objective of my upcoming thesis is to enhance the VA that can fully interactive and more responsive to user requests or questions. VA also assists companies in their internal process which help them focus more on customer satisfaction. By continuing my research, I believe I can make a worthwhile contribution to this technology by making it become more responsive, more reliable and gain more profit for human daily lives. Automation and digital assistant definitely are the need for many manufacturers from my country to get their chance with international business. The digital assistance, especially the Virtual Assistant (VA) is generally self-employed and provides professional administrative, which offers great help in customer service and support for busy executives. The difference between successful businesses and underperforming ones often lies in the way they treat their customers, new research finds. All machine is invented to make our life easier and with the business producer, make their customer happier. Imagined about a machine could help us to do daily work, perform a simple task with voice control, also support our school work, this motivates me to get deeper research into it. - As of 2017, the capabilities and usage of virtual assistants are expanding rapidly. When searching for this technology, I got an impression in a machine called smart speaker from Google and Amazon company who have installed their developed VA into a speaker. Since this product requires users to get close to it have interaction, I have an idea of making it can be controlled with users away from the product's microphone which they call Distance Speech Recognition. I start research by using what I learn from university, I found this field of Speech Recognition is bigger than I expected. With guidance from my advisor, I need to break down and step by step approaching it. I completed my Engineer thesis with the first step that we able to indicate where a speaker is standing. - At the time doing my final thesis, I seek for more opportunity to improve my skills and decided to challenge myself in the position of Embedded Developer in FPT Software company which have a professional environment for students to practice in. By overcoming this challenge, I have a Good degree in Automation and Control Engineer and gain quite an amount of working experience in a software company that not many fresh graduate engineers got. - My current research in Speech Recognition required deeper study about Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligent. I choose Taiwan for my further study as it has a great education system also got amazing technology system. My small family includes four peoples: - My father works as an Accountant at Preventive Health Centers. In which provide medical service including vaccine, health advice, disease prevention method for customers. - My mother used to work as vice president in the Health Service Dept. which responsible for all medical problems in all cities. But she already retired because of working pressure. So now she just does housework and takes care of my younger sister. - My younger sister is studying high school and is preparing to go to university. As a student in engineering, I know other students the same major with me hard to reach the information from university because most announcements using hard paper. I am one of the founders of the Department of Electrical Electronic Media Division (DEE Media). Our objective is to ensure this information could be transfer to students in my department. I working as a Video content creator in DEE Media. I am responsible for creating an introduction video for the department's events like Green Summer Campaign, Spring Volunteer Campaign, New Student Welcoming,... Also, I work as a photographer in these events. With this role, I worked with many video creator software, from normal like Proshow Producer to professional like Adobe After Effect. Also as a member of Media Division, I support planning charity activities to help people living in remote areas and elementary student in border villages by giving them necessary supplies for their living. These experiences have provided me with numerous opportunities to be involved with diverse people and situations, make mistakes, learn from them and teach those around me what I’ve learned. Our Media Division become a bridge between faculties and other students in my department. - Because of my contribution above, I have a prior to participate in the most significant volunteer campaign in HCMUT is Green Summer campaign. I am a member of the Electrical team which desires to replace and fix the unsafe electrical facilities of poor family's house around Ho Chi Minh city. In next year, I also worked for the Electrical team but in a Team Leader role. I have more responsible than the previous year like recruit members, training, organize and manage shift calendar for over 100 members by their ability, examine and estimate needed facilities for each area,... Taking Leader role not easy as I thought. I have to go over between every house our team working to check on them, lack of equipment while the many houses to handle, to support them if there any problems, some houses's facilities take us working till night when there no light around, . These difficulties train me hard, and able to overcome it make me stronger, be better prepared each time and me better leader through time. Through these volunteer works, I learned a lot about community, how they lives everyday, how they suffer in harsh environment, and how they overcome it. I realize there many things I not been taught at school and also there many things I learn at school could be use useful in real live. - In the last two and a half years, I focus more on my study and technical works. Different with other universities, our university provided many competitions for students to participate in to practice their technical work. I participated in several competitions organize for HCMUT students. One of the most remarkable competition is Raise Your Arm Competition 2015. This competition is HCMUT cooperate with Texas Instrument company to provide hardware for each team to create their own project. I am working with 2 other students to create a project called Infrared Virtual Keyboard. Although not winning in this competition, we gained much experience when working, sharing, solving every problem together. Also, this is a foundation for our team achieved a second-place Line Following Car competition at the Electrical Department Anniversary of Founding date. In this competition, we have to create a car that can automatically follow the line provided by examiners. Coming through every competition together, I realize our time are getting tougher, solve every problems easier and could learn from each other by completing every task together. By participated in these competitions, I not only could sharpen technical skills but also show me many aspect of a student life. - In my senior year, with guidance from my advisor Ph.D. Pham Viet Cuong, I join in Scientific Research organized by Electrical Department with sponsor 10 million VND in 1 year for each team. We are only 5 teams got a qualification to receive sponsor from University with (add topic title). Our idea on this research is instead of using only one single microphone for speech recognition task, we use a microphone array to enhance record audio quality so that the recognition task could perform more efficiently. As a team leader in 3-member team, my responsibility is writing proposal for our project, divided project into small task and assign to each member, organize group meeting,... We get excited at beginning of the project, but after some unsuccessful experiment, we fall to despression, plus with pressure from school work and exam. Finally we got overcome it by precious guidances from our advisor, and we are able to successful defense our project before university's council. - I apply a job in FPT Software to get more experience before gradute from university. FSoft is a member company of FPT Group. FPT is the largest information technology service company in Vietnam and has been present in 45 countries including the United States, Japan, Taiwan,... . After two week of training, I am assigned into a project of LG Electronics from Korea. In this project, we have to create software for the car's board monitor which operates to play media, navigation, control, display information. This is my first time working in a big project and making mistakes is unavoidable. But luckily I working with senior in this area, so I learned a lot from them and also learned from mistake. Come to next project of my career is work for Panasonic from Japan to create Pet monitor camera which will track for pets in houses, connect, display picture and video on mobile phone. With experiences from previous project, I got more familar with Software Development process, make less mistake and being given a leader position in small testing group in final stage of the project. This not only enhanced my technical and non-technical skills, but also help me understand how big Technology company is operating, what they value for, and which trending technologies such as Industry 4.0. - Learning not the only purpose I coming to Taiwan, I come with eager to understand its culture, and also expand relationship with other local and international students. - **Some activity I take part in at the time study in Taiwan:** - As a Vietnamese student study in Taiwan, I take time to support the Vietnamese Student Association in NCKU (VSA-NCKU). One of the event I take part in is 2019 Vietnamese Culture Week (VCW). In this event, we are share our traditional cuisine, costomes, games and music to students to local friends as well as international friends. I got responsible for Vietnamese games and cuisine and this also my first time to cook a Vietnamese food in Taiwan. I also support new students from Vietnam, help them get familar with new environment in order to quickly focus to their study. - I also participated in an event organized by NCKU Student Association, NCKU World Exposition. In this event, I attended as a photographer for Vietnamese Pavilion and other country Pavilion in the event such as Malaysia, Paraguay, Taiwan, and Philippine. I have made a lot of international friends in the event, also got more understanding in many other country's cultures. - More staying in Taiwan, I am more interested in Taiwan's culture. The most significant festival here that I had a chance to play a part in is the Dragon Boat Festival 2020. I joined with other members in VSA to be a team in the annual Dragon Boat Race contest organize in An-Ping district. This is my first time get into a boat and use paddle to row by myself. We are train very hard, exhausted but not given up. Although not winning at this contest, it leaves me unforgettable memories and appealing experiences. - Career Planning - My short-term goal is that I must complete what I started in Taiwan is to achieve my Master's degree in Computer Science. So that I could officially work as a software engineer or more specific is AI researcher. My intention when coming to Taiwan is just using English as my primary communication method. But as long as I stay in Taiwan, the more I want to discover the culture and life in this country. I learning Chinese in the first year and found this really a fascinating language that takes time to understand them. So I planning to stay here after complete my study to learning more Chinese and traveling around Taiwan.I will try to search for some freelance job online or internship in programming to supplement my studies and help pay for my living expense in Taiwan. - Taiwan is now becoming a top destination for Artificial Intelligent (AI) in Asia. Global players such as Google and IBM also expressed their intention of developing AI research center in Taiwan. So, in my opinion, Taiwan got a great invironment for people who want to seek for new technology or start their career in AI. After graduating from NCKU, a job in Asus AI Research or a researcher at Google Taipei would be the most desirable for my career in Taiwan. More explore more study in the career, more interested I am in technology. I want to continue my current research about VA and make it a better machine like Home Assistant or broader like Virtual Employee for paperwork in a company or Virtual Reception for Hotel Business. - [have offer in Vietnam]Moreover, I have an intention to come back to Vietnam and find a place in VinAI Research, one of largest AI research lab in Vietnam funded by VinGroup, where could provide me a suitable environment to contribute my understanding as a researcher.
