The next day, Quintus was walking through the garden with the king, and he was looking at the different flowers. Then the king. "How", he said, "Out of the city of Pompeii did you escape?. Did your father and mother survive?" Quinus [was] sad. "My father died", he said. "My mother too and sister died in the city. I and one slave survived. That slave, who was brave and was so loyal, was set free." "Who then did [things]", said the king. "Did you have money?" "All houses, which father possessed in Campania, I sold. In this way I was able to get much money. Then I wanteed to leave out of Italy, because I was sad. Therefore, my ex-slave and I boarded a ship. First, we came to Greece and we lived in the city of Athens. This city was very beautiful, but the citizens were disorderly. Many philosophers, who were crowding the forum every day, were having debates among themselves. After a few months, we wanted to see another city. Therefore we sailed to Egypt, and soon arrived to the city of Alexander.
