But SpaceX is such a big company, that we are mainly going to talk about their Starlink project. ### Reason for choice: (D) We took notice of Elon Musk and his innovations quite a while ago and followed his progress and journey ever since. But the project that caught our attention lately is Starlink, which was really interesting for the world of computer science and actually everyone else on earth. Thats why we wanted to present SpaceX and Starlinnk in particular and bring it a bit closer to you. Question: - What other project of Elon Musk or SpaceX do you know? - Who of you guys have heard of Starlink and do you know what it is? ### History of company / who is Elon and what is SpaceX (D) But first lets have a look at Elon himself. because hi is an important figure when it comes to spaceX. `Go to next slide` You probably all have heard of Elon Musk before for sure. `ask who hasn't heard of him` So, his full name is actually Elon Reeve Musk and was born on June 1971 in South Africa. (Pretoria) He's a father of 7 children of 4 wives in total.... He grew up with his younger sister Tosca and his younger brother Kimbal Musk. After his parents got divorced in 1980 he lived in Southafrica with his father most of the time, where he also went to high school. In that time period Elon was a victim of bullying. It even went that far that he had to be brought to the hospital, because he got beaten up until he was unconcious. But he didnt give up and focused on his interests. By the age of 10 he started to develop a big interest for computers and started programming. With 16 his brother and him moved to North America to avoid the military service in South Africa. Thats where he stayed and started to study at Pennsylvania University and got his bachelors degree in physics and national economy. In 1995 he started his PHD in physics at Stanford university but after two days he decided to drop out and start his first own company --> Zip2 `go to next slide` Lets have a quick look at his career and the Companies he founded and projects he launched: `ask what of those you know and which u wanna know what it is` `to next slide` Now lets talk about the history of SpaceX. Was founded in 2002 with about 30 employees for the development of their first rocket Falcon1. Three years later the amount of employees increased to 130. In 2008 the Falcon1 had its first successful launch into orbit. The following few years they had some smaller projects, where they flew crewmembers of the ISS to their station and back and also brought them supplies etc. But then in 2016 they published their first plans for Starlink. And in May 2019 they launched Falcon9 with 60 prototype satellites for their enormous project Starlink. This brings us to the main topic: ### Product description / what is Starlink (J) Starlink is a new approach of the company SpaceX that persues the mass distribution of internet connection worldwide, on the whole planet without any radio holes as long as you are on the surface of earth. This sounds like a utopia but it is on its best way to be reality. As you can see on this live updated map of our orbit `shows map`, we already have 1915 satelites only for starlink online up in our sky, in the moment we're speaking right now. As we can see there have been some small issues with burnt down satellites that got to close into the atmosphere and burnt down or just are not function, but this is a small percentage and is to be expected with such an enormous project. But it doesn't stop there, the plans for expansion are already on the go, for the phase of 2022 it is planned that over 2000 additional satellites should circulate around orbit. And in phase 3 we are talking of over 7000 satellites in the polar orbit. `show picture of polar orbit` Which is the trajectory 90° to the equator. ### Status & Market position / why is it unique what does it mean for everyone on the planet? (D) At the moment, in Switzerland for example, you are already able to use Starlink with an incredible performance. With 100-200 Mbit/s, which is equivalent to streaming Ultra HD movies on 8 devices at the same time or download a movie in about 3 minutes, and a latency of not more than 20ms, the time that a signal takes to go to the destined location and come back, the satellite based internetprovider is technically speaking better than most copper cables that we use today. ### whats the status on Starlink now how does the future of it look? (J) ### Problems? Controversies (J) But of course with every great project problems are a given thing. There are researches and studies that worry about the project of Starlink and to some degree they are worth mentioning: ### Sources (D) :flag-ua: https://satellitemap.space/ ### Questions (J)
