# Alignment Conservers - WIP

Alignment Conservers are entities that play a fundamental role in facilitating and protecting Maker Governance. They must foster Universal Alignment as codified in the [Atlas](maker-core/atlas.md) and oppose misalignment.

They enable MKR holders to have Universally Aligned participation, by ensuring it is very easy for MKR holders to make aligned decisions and that there are strong protections against misalignment.

## Roles

Alignment Conservers can have one and only one of the following roles:

- [AVC](avc.md) member
- [Aligned Delegate](delegates.md)
- [Facilitator](facilitatorsubdao.md?)
- [Budget Allocator](?)

Ecosystem Actors that become recognized as a type of Alignment Conserver may not assume any other ecosystem role.

## Purpose

The Maker Atlas is designed to safeguard the interests of MKR holders. By preserving and protecting the Atlas from changes and creeping misalignment, Alignment Conservers function as guardians of MKR holders' interests.

Alignment Conservers may never change the Atlas or governance dynamics unless they do it within the Atlas processes and frameworks. During Pregame, AVC Members are allowed and encouraged to help refine the Atlas and the [Scope Artifacts](scopes-and-frameworks.md).

## Recognition and Duties

Generally, Alignment Conservers have the duty to:
- Preserve the Atlas
- Oppose and publicly expose all forms of corruption, organizational drifts, and other threats to the Constitution

When assuming the roles available to them, Alignment Conservers also become subject to the requirements specific to their role. Alignment Conservers are encouraged to be anonymous. Some of the roles require anonymity.

The [Governance Scope](listofscopes.md) gives recognition to Alignment Conservers. An Alignment Conserver can be derecognized if they act against their general or specific duties or against any of the requirements attached to their role.

If the breach is *mild*, the Alignment Conserver receives a warning, which is recorded by the Governance Scope. There are no further consequences for *first-time* breaches.

If the breach is *severe*, the Alignment Conservers is derecognized and no longer receives the privileges attached to their Alignment Conserver role.
