# Atomic sampling
This approach to data sampling takes every transaction within an [Analysis Period](/conspoQ5TNmH5pfZqp-LfQ) as an event that changes the state of the system.
This can either be scaled by event - each transaction is a 'clock tick', or by 'real time' - where seconds or minutes are clock ticks, and events are mapped as they occur in the timeleine.
