# Measuring the desert fog while zooming in multi-scale maps

## Hypotheses

* (H1) It takes longer to know where you are after a zoom, then after a pan.
* (H2) The desert fog exists when zooming in and zooming out.
* (H3) There is more desert fog when the scale difference is bigger.
* (H4) The style and generalisation has an effect on the intensity of the desert fog.

## Variables

* 2 interactions techniques (zoom and pan)
* 2 directions for the zoom technique (in and out)
* 2 scale differences (2 distances for pan?)
* 3 different maps (OSM, IGN classique, plan IGN)

## Task

Finding target features (a building at large scale, something else when zooming out)?

Same start image at the target scale, and with the zoom you first zoom out than zoom in.

Control the animation (speed).

Success is assessed with the distance to the target, and the time of completion.

## Setup of the experiment

2 blocks of trials:
* a block where variables are interaction-direction-scale gap, with a fixed map style (IGN Classique)
* a block where variables are interaction and map style, with a fixed direction (zoom in), and a fixed scale gap (large).

Use Zoom or other soft during the experiment.

### First block

Example of first block:
1. zoom + in + small gap
2. pan + in
3. zoom + in + large gap
4. pan + in
5. zoom + out + small gap
6. pan + out
7. zoom + out + large gap
8. pan + out

and then again the same variables for trials 9-16.
If we count 15 sec max for a trial, first block is around 4 min.

### Second block

Example of second block:
1. zoom + OSM
2. pan + IGN
3. zoom + IGN
4. pan + plan IGN
5. zoom + plan IGN
6. pan + OSM

and then again the same variables for trials 7-18 (3 trials per pair interaction+style).
If we count 15 sec max for a trial, first block is around 5 min.

In total, we need 34 different targets, including 8 at small scales, and 26 at large scales, and we need 4 + 6 = 10 animations for each of the 26 large scale targets, and 4 animations for each of the 8 small scale targets (a total of 292 animations).
