But it denpends on you if you wish to use it or not. - The grading of each problem is simply Yes or No. Use `1` and `2` keys on your keyboard for faster grading! Problem Grading time maximum: Q1.3: 20 seconds/exam Q1.4: 35 seconds/exam Q1.2: 5 seconds/exam Problem Grading time average Q1.3: 5 seconds/exam Q1.4: 15 seconds/exam Q1.2: 3 seconds/ exam Of course, you will be assigned by 3 hours for TA time. Cheers! ## Instructions for Find+ Firstly, You need to have a Google Chrome. Then, open the APP webpage: [Find +](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/find%20-regex-find-in-page/fddffkdncgkkdjobemgbpojjeffmmofb?hl=en) in Chrome and install the gagit. After a successful installation, a small icon would appear in your browser: ![](https://i.imgur.com/a6CMPCH.png) In case if you can not find the icon, simply click the button and pin it on your board. ![](https://i.imgur.com/kdZ4bvR.png =200x200) Open the settings of this APP, enalble **presistent highlight** ![](https://i.imgur.com/oLEMXjH.png =300x250) Then use the regular expression, you can highlight all key words, for example, use `` (calculus|derivative|instantaneous|rate|change|differential|integra) `` So you can highlight all keywords Here you can manage shortcuts:``chrome://extensions/shortcuts`` ### Grading Assignments: |Number|Name|Email| -|-|-|- 1-140| Sheila Rajagopalan, Uttara| uttara.sheilarajagopalan@mail.utoronto.ca 141-280| Meng, Haoming| haoming.meng@mail.utoronto.ca 281-420| Li, Lu Yi (Lina)| linali.li@mail.utoronto.ca 421-560| Taylor, Jacob| jwt630@usask.ca 561-700| Verreault, Sarah| sarah.verreault@mail.utoronto.ca 701-840| Watmough, Kevin| kevin.watmough@mail.mcgill.ca 841-980| Zamel, Yazan| yazan.zamel@mail.utoronto.ca 981-1040;| Zhang, Stanley| stanleyb.zhang@mail.utoronto.ca 1041-1310| Fellini, Nick| n.fellini@mail.utoronto.ca 1311-1450| Politou, Eva| eva.politou@mail.utoronto.ca 1451-1625|**Changjian** 1626-1800|**Zhu** 1801-1975|**Emile** 1976-2150|**Gaurav** 2151-2283|**Gaurav**(hour exchange with Qirui ) ## If you wish to see some grading samples: Main two goals: 1. Quick grading 2. Be generous ## Question 2 Q2:Briefly describe one area of the faculty member's current work in one sentence. Policy : Read so that you understand the rest of the answer. You also need to assign overall grade to here. > Sample Answer: Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary physics. ## Question 3 Q3:Imagine you applied for an undergrad research opportunity with that faculty member's research group. In an interview, the supervisor asks you to write a one sentence description for each of your first-year courses to summarize the overall theme of the course. What is your sentence for MAT135? POLICY: Give 2 marks for an OK MAT135 Sentence (doesn't need to be great, just OK - note that there is no 1 point score) > Sample Answers ( 2 marks ): MAT135 has taught us a way to assemble relatively simple quantitative models of change, and to conclude their results, by studying them at an instantaneous rate of change (a tiny interval). > Sample Answer #2 (2 marks): The meaning of derivative of a function and its application in real life situation. > Sample Answer ( 0 marks): MAT135 is a course that teaches you the basic fundamentals of the knowledge that you need, but also allows students to gain active problem solving skills by providing them an environment where they can start to critically think on how to apply and manipulate these basic skills to more both real life scenarios and more complex problems that they have not seen before. ## Question 4 Q4:Your potential advisor asks you how you see your first-year courses being useful in their work. Use the sentence that you identified in Q1.3 to explain how MAT135 can be useful in their work? Policy for CONNECTION Points (2 points): (note that there is no 1 point score) 2 points: OK Connection to sentence in Q1.3 Math in MAT135 0 points: The answer is replaceable by any subject areas/ no essential information. > Sample Answer(2 marks - connection to MATH in MAT135 ): MAT135 would be beneficial to your work as I would be able to apply my understanding of functions and their derivatives to model mathematical relationships between various quantities and rates that you would encounter in your work and then generate estimates based off my mathematical models. For example, in your research you describe that the presence of certain types of CD56+ and CD3- cells can inhibit the growth of T cells; my MAT135 knowledge would allow me to identify and establish a potential mathematical function that depicts the relationship between these three quantities. For instance lets represent the "amount of CD56+ cells," the "amount of CD3- cells" and "amount of T cells grown" using variables x, y and z respectively. Then, if I were given two data tables where one table contains data for x and z and and the second table contains data for y and z, I could create two functions to model the individual relationships between quantities x and y with quantity z based on the data tables. For example, these two functions could be z = e^(x/4) and z = y^3. From there I could create a composite function from the two functions to model the overall relationship between all three quantities and predict the value of one quantity (e.g. the amount of T cell growth) based on the values of the other two quantities. Furthermore, using my MAT135 knowledge I could also derive this composite function to determine the rates of change of each quantity with respect to one another and using this function's derivative I could predict how one of the three quantities might change depending on changes in the other two quantities. Thus, these mathematical models would help to provide further insight and clarity into the mechanisms by which innate lymphoid cells regulate T cell responses. >Sample Answer (2 marks - connectionto the theme in 1.3 ):The understanding of financial crises requires a deep mathematical understanding of how and when exactly things started going wrong. By using the concepts of tangent line approximations and rates of change of past data I will be able to determine when the key indicators of Economic health took a turn for the worst in Latin America. By interpreting these changes in understandable ways I will also be able to communicate mathematical knowledge in written and spoken form which may further prove useful in areas such as securing funding for the research. > Sample Answer (2 marks - connection to MAT135 - even though that connection is pretty weak! ): Game theory and nash equilibrium utilise concepts of differential calculus to estimate the best possible outcome for a given player. The course material covered in MAT135 would equip me to assist in this research study and effectively contribute by incorporating my knowledge of derivatives and functions. First, my knowledge of mathematical tools and concepts will allow me to correctly estimate the best reply strategy by taking the first derivative of the pay function and equating that with zero to calculate the desired result. Second, mathematical modelling strategies covered in the course will allow my to graph and tabulate my different results for different values of the variable inputs and outlined parameters. Third, using mathematical language I will be able to theoretically (verbally) explain and communicate my working and the subsequent results values through written paragraphs. As such, I believe that the knowledge base that i have developed in MAT135 will be crucial in my participation in your work. > Sample Answer (0 marks - not relevant to the topic of research that was identified in the Q1.1):The calculus concepts in combination with the interpersonal and problem solving skills learned in MAT135 can be an asset to the research team as students at the end of this course are proficient in transforming the calculated numbers on the page into real life situations. For example, MAT135 students can interpret the social consequences for aging populations from data, such as the growing need for more long-term care facilities and demand for increased availability of cochlear implants procedures. MAT135 has not only provided us with basic calculus concepts that can be used in any field of research, but the monthly applied communication tasks have also strengthened our ability to apply and communicate our calculus ideas to any audience. We can offer a new interdisciplinary perspective to the research being conducted, and encourage others to see the bigger picture. Overall, Final ASSESSMENT: Did the response tie together the faculty member’s research topic AND MAT135?
