## Game Production Pipeline Personal Journal ###### tags: `Uni work` `Games Art` # <21343319>_J5Z1020_journal ### Game Production Pipeline ### Games Art BA(Hons) L5 ### Jannah Rahman --- ## Introduction In this journal, I will be documenting the process of my own personal work from the Game Production Pipeline unit. In my group, we have all agreed to create our own stage and enemies based on a chosen theme or open concept. I have decided to go with an open concept theme as I want to have the freedom of choosing the theme I will base my stage on. I have decided that I want my theme to be based on rock monsters in a cave. I want to create enemies with different kinds of rocks such as obsidian, basalt, crystals, diamonds etc. ### Inspiration #### Hades Hades is an action role playing game that is isometric. In this game you play as a character who is trying to escape to reach a new destination. Players must fight through enemies by hack and slash action. Here is a view to how the game looks when playing. Figure 1: Hades Environment (Source: MCV Devlop, 2021:online) ![](https://i.imgur.com/faMLnj9.jpg) In Figure 1 showing an environment from the game Hades (Source: MCV Devlop, 2021:online), it is clear that the environment is createed isometrically. The character seems to be attacking an enemey controlled by the player. In my group, this is the main aim for our pipeline as we want to create an isometric game where you can attack enemies. We will heavily take inspiration from this game. #### Skylanders Skylanders is a 3D platorm game made by Activision. In this game there are various types of characters with their own unique design. I am particulary interested in a caharcter named 'Prism Break'. This character is made out of rocks and crystals. Figure 1: Prism Break (Source: Fandom, no date:online) ![](https://i.imgur.com/xZ9vnbp.png) In Figure 1 showing the character named Prism Break (Source: Fandom, no date:online), this character is made from completely natural elements. Majority of their body is made out of a plain brown rock. The hands however is made out of green crystals. This combination gives the character its unique design. This is something I will try to do when creating my characters. ### Mood board Here are 3 mood boards I made. These are ideas for a hero, enemies and environments. Here is my moodboard for a hero idea. This character will be controlled by the players. ![](https://i.imgur.com/DmnKDhh.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/gnSv0Vd.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/iJqNGvP.jpg) ## Hero concept Firstly I designed a few silhouettes of different survivors ![](https://i.imgur.com/npSxcps.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/yaYpIMT.jpg) I chose the one that stood out the most to me although I liked all of them equally. ![](https://i.imgur.com/RBwEB0D.png) This one stood out the most to me because it shows a confident strong young woman who will be a good fit as a survivor. I then went into detail of designing this character. Here is the process. ![](https://i.imgur.com/qdVMupA.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/KQlcguj.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/z54d2ZS.jpg) Here is the character sheet of my suvivor. I used yellow, turquoise, black and white as the colour scheme to give her a heroic look. This makes her look friendly, noble and optimistic. ## Enemies I am tasked to create 3 standard enemies and 3 mini bosses to fit their stages in which they will appear. All of these bosses will have their own unique attacks which ranges on different damage points. For standard enemies I have to create: - Common enemey: This is a standard boss which appears more frequent than others and does regular damage. - Small enemey: This boss attacks quicker than others but does less damage. They are easily defeated. - Giant enemey: This boss appears less than others but does more severe damage to players and are harder to beat. For mini bosses I have to create 3 for the mini boss stage. ### Process and outcomes #### Standard Enemy Here are the standard variations. I made 2 different design then 3 variations each. ![](https://i.imgur.com/nfsHkaY.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/QYraaLm.jpg) After designing them, I decided I liked the first design which is this one: ![](https://i.imgur.com/8Tl0Zwd.png) After selecting this silhouette, I began the design process to create this character in detail. ![](https://i.imgur.com/xSF1nK7.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/BrAKUVG.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/htVuuxn.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/0rBNXXZ.jpg) Here is the outcome of my standard enemy. I coloured her in a plain grey colour, similar to a basic kind of rock but added purple hues to add some originality. #### Giant Enemy Here are some silhouette variations of my giant enemy design. I decided to make it a very tanky and heavy looking enemy. ![](https://i.imgur.com/m3g4eoD.jpg) Here is the sillhouette I chose. ![](https://i.imgur.com/DD088HG.jpg) I then began the design process. ![](https://i.imgur.com/e2lgYrU.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/UKyjq9R.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/AsdepAR.jpg) Here is the final out come of my giant enemy design. ![](https://i.imgur.com/xDCyrRd.jpg) I coloured him dark to make him look similar to obsidian rock. This kind of rock formed by lava and is used for cutting which is why I designed him with sharp rocks around his arm. I also included green crystals so he stands out rather than him just being a plain dark rock. #### Small Enemy Here are some silhouettes for my small enemy design. I decided that I wanted it to be an animal creature rather than a humanoid one. This is because animals are sometimes smaller than humans which fits well with a small concept enemy. ![](https://i.imgur.com/GIj1s6N.jpg) This is the sillhouette I chose: ![](https://i.imgur.com/S7NhTxs.png) Here is the process of the design: ![](https://i.imgur.com/pPuFn4o.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/eQyq3Ri.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/1pDZDT7.png) ![](https://i.imgur.com/lxLSjkE.jpg) Here is the final design of the small enemy. I coloured it in a tan colour to resemble rocks from the Grand Canyon. Like the giant enemy design, I added blue crystals to compliment the colour choices in my design. #### Mini Boss 1 Here is the start of my mini boss designs. I first wanted to create a enemy made up of entirely Emerald. Here are my silhouettes. ![](https://i.imgur.com/XXgjaO0.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/oHeFxku.jpg) This is the sillhouette I liked. ![](https://i.imgur.com/KCvFFTX.png) Here is the design process: ![](https://i.imgur.com/gJ0AoBP.jpg) I created the line art without doing an initial skecth over the sillhouette first. ![](https://i.imgur.com/JqxHdTu.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/j3pUydZ.jpg) Here is the outcome of my first mini boss. I really like how this turned out. I designed her elegantly because Emeralds asocciates with beauty, class and vanity. #### Mini Boss 2 Here are the silhouettes for my second mini boss. I decided to make this enemy a very huge rock monster with a child-like and erie appearance. ![](https://i.imgur.com/6ACpdWM.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/SUFYu5k.jpg) I chose this sillhouette. ![](https://i.imgur.com/PVbXpKb.png) Here is the design process: ![](https://i.imgur.com/h5m6xIS.jpg) Again, for this design I simply just drew over the sillhouette and made it my line art just like the first mini boss. ![](https://i.imgur.com/SK6G2TX.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/Gs5jwjA.jpg) Here is the outcome of the second mini boss. I based this enemy on caves because of its simple design. He is made out of big plain rocks like a cave. The glowing eyes represents mysterious character as if you were to be in a cave not knowing what else is with you. I added tally marks which potrays that people might have been stuck in a cave and marked their days on rocks. #### Mini Boss 3 Here is the sillhouettes of my third mini boss. I wanted to base it on a spider in relation to the second mini boss based on a cave. Spiders are related to dark isolated environments so this fits well with this idea. ![](https://i.imgur.com/w0HyZ9A.jpg) I chose this sillhouette desisgn: ![](https://i.imgur.com/SuFqp5q.png) Here is the process of my third mini boss design: ![](https://i.imgur.com/0MvGyvc.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/2GPCusb.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/eH2hW8v.jpg) Here is the outcome. I used dark colours in relation to spiders being dark colours. However i added ruby crystals and gold. This makes the spider look somewhat exotic. ### Overseer For my Overseer, I wanted to base it on a volcano. I chose this idea because there are many types igneous rocks there which relates to the theme of my stage. I will also make this Overseer female. Usually final boss characters are based on a male appearance, however since my designs are based on rocks, they are also part of mother-nature. Mother-nature is seen as female so I will use this fact into creating my Overseer. #### Process and outcomes Here are my Overseer silhouettes. I designed them all with their own type of crown and protruding crystals. ![](https://i.imgur.com/gyRsS4o.jpg) This one stood out to me the most because she looks like a very powerful ruler. It also gives off a knight appearance. ![](https://i.imgur.com/Z3HUJjB.png) Here is the process of my Overseer design. ![](https://i.imgur.com/oiO9gMV.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/Xw0Rluq.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/jKeNRm0.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/VETRriP.jpg) Here is the outcome. I am very happy with the way this design turned out. I used lava as her hair in relation to a volcanic environment. Her body is made up of volcanic magma rocks. There are cracks in the rocks which contains lava in them. Her eyes also lava in them which glows when she get angerier. I added purple crystals around her arms and her nails which compliments the colour of lava and is also a rare colour for crystals. ![](https://i.imgur.com/CFfpcwQ.jpg) Here is the back of the Overseer. The back of her hair has lava infinitely flowing. ## Environment ![](https://i.imgur.com/p2gLiA6.png) ![](https://i.imgur.com/BRWiS8n.png) ![](https://i.imgur.com/ZHvdv3Q.png) ### Process and outcomes #### Entrance room For my entrance room, I wanted to give it a calm environment as it is the beginning of this stage. Here is a quick greyscaled sillhouette of how I want the entrance room to be. In this layout I added pillars with crystals on top of them, large triangular cut crystals embbeded into the floor, a waterfall and 4 chests which are represented by the blocks. On the bottom right, there are leviating stairs made from rocks which players will walk on to enter. ![](https://i.imgur.com/8EE8w6V.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/tKZZv4H.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/1wUZAPC.jpg) Here is the outcome of my entrance stage. I used a neautral blue colour palette which gives this environment a calm astmosphere. The water fall also adds onto this metaphorically which is why I included it. #### Mini Boss Room For my mini boss stage, I wanted to give it some uniqueness by having floors placed on slightly different levels next to each other. Here is a thumbnail of the stage. I also wanted it to look like a lavish room so I will add some gold borders on each floor panel. ![](https://i.imgur.com/080psPu.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/GyRDkBr.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/MbkH5RP.jpg) Here is the outcome of my mini boss room. I believe I achieved a lavish look for it because of the combination of gold, crystals and marble floors. However, i do think that i could have made this stage more wider as it looks slightly empty. #### Chest Room To create my chest room, I deicided I could add some hidden feature on it for the players. On this thumbnail i made i drew an emerald in the middle which can be broken by players. it will reward them stonger weapons and items which are better than what the chests gives you. ![](https://i.imgur.com/dTZ6NsZ.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/JXbU6yR.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/udEncs2.jpg) Here is the outcome of my chest room. This room is rather simple as it only has chests. the only detail about this environment is the emerald as i wanted that to be something to stand out which might make players interact with it. I added a golden border to help the emerald stand out more and can hint to players that there is something special about the emerald. I also gave it a glow so it can catch the players attention to it. #### Final Boss room For my final boss room, I decided to match this with the Overseer. Since she is made from molten rocks, crystals and lava I will try to create this stage with the same elements. Here is the design process. ![](https://i.imgur.com/WoEv2qD.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/gT6T6B4.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/iPF8xhB.jpg) Here is the final outcome of my final boss stage. I created this stage to be bigger than others with a platform designed differently. ### Evaluation Overall on my contribution of this project, I believe i have participated the standard amount. This is because all of us were assigned to create our own stages and enemies. I delivered the required amount of bosses, mini bosses and stages without leaving behind. I also created one survivor as all of us created our own. For improvement, I could have created weapons and items which were not something everyone was assigned to do. This would have allowed me to give greater contribution as there would be more pieces of work made by me. This would have made my body of work more interesting to look at. ### Bibliography Hades Wikipedia.
