# Russia is killing civilians. Twitter is helping them cover it up

Twitter is allowing the Russian government to cover its war crimes through accounts for its outlets around the world. Hoaxlines found no fewer than 26 posts on Twitter in multiple languages where Russia denied it has killed civilians, told civilians they were free to leave, or where the Russian account cited fake events to justify its actions. Although the Ukrainian spirit won’t soon break, Russians have been bombing, shooting, and killing everything else.

Most worrisome of all, several posts promise that Ukrainian civilians may leave their cities safely, but videos and calls from people in multiple cities in Ukraine say that civilians are being killed indiscriminately. [One caller](https://twitter.com/i/spaces/1OdKrBealBqKX?s=20) today, stated that the civilian killings were intentional. Targets of Russian aggression have included [children](https://twitter.com/MelaniePodolyak/status/1498633895528603649?s=20&t=NLs1ch1-pWGO0zihab9HpA) [who died](https://twitter.com/StratcomCentre/status/1498300238209105925?s=20&t=NLs1ch1-pWGO0zihab9HpA), [civilians](https://twitter.com/UKRinLTU/status/1498416944185290756?s=20&t=NLs1ch1-pWGO0zihab9HpA) [taken](https://twitter.com/ng_ukraine/status/1498339809844244480?s=20&t=NLs1ch1-pWGO0zihab9HpA) [hostage](https://twitter.com/UkraineIam/status/1498557607518351361?s=20&t=NLs1ch1-pWGO0zihab9HpA), [schools](https://twitter.com/golub/status/1498412343100948480?s=20&t=NLs1ch1-pWGO0zihab9HpA), a [maternity hospital](https://twitter.com/ua_industrial/status/1498811034123001860), [apartments](https://twitter.com/Graty_me/status/1498796877092900864), [town squares](https://twitter.com/BackAndAlive/status/1498573863587827712), [private homes](https://twitter.com/SESU_UA/status/1498786001325547524?s=20&t=NLs1ch1-pWGO0zihab9HpA), and communications infrastructure like the [TV Tower](https://twitter.com/IAPonomarenko/status/1498682707013947402?s=20&t=NLs1ch1-pWGO0zihab9HpA).

Weapons used against the Ukrainians include the Totchka-U ballistic [missile](https://twitter.com/mhmck/status/1498736874017501192?s=20&t=NLs1ch1-pWGO0zihab9HpA), and [cluster munitions](https://twitter.com/EliotHiggins/status/1498714546307014658?s=20&t=y8V5Tj3jXg74Ct30q-ILqA) designed to inflict mass casualties and damage. Cluster munitions are [banned](https://www.clusterconvention.org/) [in over 100](https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2022/02/ukraine-cluster-munitions-kill-child-and-two-other-civilians-taking-shelter-at-a-preschool/) countries. Reports of a [TOS-1](https://twitter.com/oryxspioenkop/status/1498697710429425672?s=20&t=NLs1ch1-pWGO0zihab9HpA) flame thrower have also been confirmed in Ukraine, a weapon capable of vaporizing human bodies.

The most shocking reports include Russians that [masqueraded](https://twitter.com/ng_ukraine/status/1498339809844244480?s=20&t=NLs1ch1-pWGO0zihab9HpA) as the operators of a bus that picked up civilians for evacuation, only to use the people as human shields later. As a justification, Putin and the leader of Belarus, which is controlled by Russia, [falsely cite](https://twitter.com/christogrozev/status/1498770544514289668?s=20&t=NLs1ch1-pWGO0zihab9HpA) Ukrainian Nazis. The same day as the Belarusian leader claimed this, Russians [destroyed](https://twitter.com/HolocaustMuseum/status/1498727938908434437?s=20&t=NLs1ch1-pWGO0zihab9HpA) a memorial commemorating the victims of the largest mass shooting of the Holocaust.

These are the crimes that these Twitter posts help conceal, deny, and minimize. It is is an act for which Twitter has earned condemnation.
