Given enough time, misconceptions and inaccuracies obfuscate the tangible reality of an event, and mythos is born. *The Merge* has finally happened, but as we approached the "Difficulty Bomb," many still do not quite understand the nuances of this transition. Fortunately, we can attempt to sift through the noise and separate fact from myth. To that end, several CUs have been hard at work priming a detailed plan of action come *Merge-day*. ##### [**Risk-001 Summary: Merge Risks and Market Impacts**](https://forum.makerdao.com/t/merge-risks-and-market-impacts/17035) Presented by @monet-supply, this thread details the many intricacies of the merge with a primary focus on its market impacts. Recently, we have seen an increased focus on the potential PoW Ethereum forks. The piece begins simply enough. > "MakerDAO is going through a governance crisis." The article posits that, from the outside looking in, Maker's path forward is becoming increasingly unclear. Before the *window of opportunity* closes entirely, the DAO must first face an "internal struggle": 1. *Preserve the ideals of cryptography, and reject the legacy system entirely,* 2. *Or embrace growth regardless of the route taken.* Since the collapse of UST, stablecoin issuers have had a singular focus: long-term stability. In the wake of the collapse, fiat-backed stables offered a "safe haven" from the extreme volatility. And then came the Tornado Cash sanctions and the freezing of all associated USDC, adding fuel to an already raging fire. > "The OFAC sanctions have been a harsh wake-up call for DeFi, bringing into focus the vulnerabilities associated with forfeiting autonomy in place of growth." Per the article, a diverse range of options and motivations were presented: For instance, [Why Maker has no choice but to prepare to free float Dai](https://forum.makerdao.com/t/the-path-of-compliance-and-the-path-of-decentralization-why-maker-has-no-choice-but-to-prepare-to-free-float-dai/17466), comes in stark contrast to [MIP81: Coinbase USDC Institutional Rewards](https://forum.makerdao.com/t/mip81-coinbase-usdc-institutional-rewards/17703?filter=summary). These proposals are the "dividing line" between the two conflicting ethea. To free float, DAI would fully embrace crypto's root ideals and move forward with the Coinbase proposal emphasizing growth over the route taken. All this to say, this "struggle" is inevitable. Not just for MakerDAO, but all DeFi protocols wading through this undefined era. Despite the accusatory tone the publication has come to be known for, the piece ends with an air of respect. > "Although controversial, Rune’s proposed gameplan may also usher in a new paradigm of non-reliance on the dollar, potentially putting DeFi out of the reach of those who want to see it stamped out. > >In proposing such bold steps, Rune is risking the death of DAI, this time by his hand. Nevertheless, faced with increasing volatility in the “real” world, with fiat currencies rapidly devaluing and no near-term end, the window of opportunity is closing fast. > >...Crypto’s original cypherpunk ethos may be a lifeline as we spiral into an ever more volatile future."
