# Geoinformatics research days
## Updates
### April '22:
Nothing like below, but 1.5 hours workshop with short intro, no hands-on, but GIS usecase presentations (by CSC) and groupwork with endresult presentations
-> collecting current/potential user cases
### 20220323: organizing team suggested
"1,5h työpajatyyppinen ohjelma tiistaina, jossa käsiteltäisiin CSC:n teholaskentaympäristöä. Geoporttipalaverissahan tätä vähän sivuttiin, ja mietittiin, että työpajassa voisi (jos nyt muistan oikein) pyrkiä käyttäjien kanssa miettimään miten kehittää ympäristön käyttöä, tjsp."
-> asking again if 2x1.5 hours are possible
### 20220314: Suggested to organizing team after chat with Kylli
* few min in Geoportti presentation
* 2 sessions workshop
* building on top of each other
* basics and login and web interface as first part
* running jobs as second part
* registration for workshop?
* need for laptop

## Työpaja - Samanthas suggestion
"Hands-on HPC for geospatial"
No presentation in beginning (short CSC intro as part of CSC peoples introductions).
* Only Puhti, some mention of Allas for storing
* provide 'material' with links to all necessary deeper information about billing units and projects and/cheatsheet how to get account, disk space and partitions, eg a hackmd with the content of our normal presentation in 'self-learning'/'self-explanatory' format
* do examples on different levels
* if 2 workshop sessions are possible then:
* 1st session:
* using existing software on Puhti (gdal, pdal, or so, SNAP gpt might also be a very relatable example for many also outside of Remote sensing world),
* use webinterface login shell to run things,
* navigating Puhti from shell, useful commands
* explain concepts of modules, project, billing units as they come up
* use Puhti graphics to show different connections and areas of Puhti (what is login node, filesystem etc, where do things go when job is submitted,...)
*
* short overview of web interface, what is possible there and what should be done via shell directly
* 2nd session: more advanced: people from first session can stay, but this session is more for people that maybe have heard already the general presentation some day (or visited Python GIS course or similar)
* what to be aware of/ look into when writing own code for Puhti.
* running things like python/R Puhti examples based on audience (prepare so that some could run R and others could run Python)
* GPU possibilities for Geospatial/ML -> link to geospatial ML material and possible course announcement (general ML course in June)
* need training accounts
* no/limited clicking for examples, all shell
* explaining concepts of BU, jobs, SLURM, projects, etc as they come up
* no presentation as such during workshop
* usecase examples of "advanced Puhti users" in the end of each session (depending if much own code or existing software is used in that usecase)
* space for questions, discussions
* EXTRA: "ask us anything"
* EXTRA (?): offer some way (maybe after the workshop or during, if there is time) for PhD students to discuss their usecase with CSC people
* Clear split between sessions
* more emphasis on Allas? Can also be used if no other CSC service is used
* problem: tools for allas (FileZilla (commercial), WinSCP (slow), CyberDuck (buggy and weird), Commandline rclone works fine but setup is horrible)
---
## Thoughts
Prerequisites:
* some CLI experience (could send some cheatsheet/material beforehand?)
* geoinformatics (not fully needed but easier to understand examples)
* CSC training account / own CSC account (project with Puhti access)
* laptop
Learner personas:
* Geospatial GUI users?
* Geospatial programmer (R/Python,...)
*
Objectives:
* lower barrier towards Puhti
* get set up to start own computations
* get to know about fundamental services and concepts (Puhti (+Puhti web interface),Allas,docs, mycsc, BU, project, SLURM, login node)
