Introduction

India's space odyssey, Chandrayaan-2, launched in 2019, captured the world's imagination. While the Vikram lander's lunar touchdown attempt faced challenges, the mission's success story continues. JAXA, the Japanese space agency, used imagery from Chandrayaan-2 to scout potential landing sites for SLIM. The high-resolution images provided by the orbiter's Terrain Mapping Camera-2 (TM-2) helped identify a safe and scientifically compelling location for the lander.

The Chandrayaan-2 imagery wasn't just about finding a landing spot. JAXA reports that during SLIM's final descent stage, the lander utilized the Chandrayaan-2 data for vision-based navigation. Using the freely available data on ISRO's public repository, PRADAN, the researcher identified the lander in the March 2024 imagery.
