# Two Roscosmos Cosmonauts Successfully Complete Spacewalk to Upgrade International Space Station

On Thursday, April 25th, 2024, two Roscosmos cosmonauts, Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub, embarked on a historic spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS). This marked the first spacewalk of 2024 for the ISS and the seventh for veteran cosmonaut Kononenko. Chub, on his second spacewalk, joined Kononenko on a mission aimed at completing the deployment of a crucial scientific instrument and conducting other maintenance tasks.

The seven-hour spacewalk, designated as Russian EVA-62, began at 10:55 AM EDT (8:25 PM IST) after the cosmonauts depressurized the Poisk airlock module and ventured into the vacuum of space. Their primary objective was to fully unfurl a panel on the Nauka module's Mini-Research Synthetic Aperture Radar (MR-SAR) system. This radar system utilizes advanced technology to generate detailed, multi-dimensional images of Earth's landscapes. During a previous spacewalk in October 2023, Kononenko and Chub encountered difficulties deploying one of the MR-SAR's four panels. This successful spacewalk rectified that issue, ensuring the complete functionality of the instrument.

Beyond the MR-SAR deployment, Kononenko and Chub's busy schedule included the installation of additional equipment and experiments on the Poisk module. These experiments are designed to monitor the extent of corrosion on the ISS's external surfaces and various modules.
