# PC Build Budget: ~ $5K Use cases: - All kinds of programming; multi threaded desktop apps, scripts, web development, cross platform and Windows-only apps (i.e. WPF, .NET framework if you're familiar with it), maybe some basic game development in the future. - Virtualization. I'll mostly be running 1 Virtual Machine and at most 3 in parallel. - Gaming on high/ultra settings. I mostly play open world games such as Skyrim, Fallout, GTA, No Man's Sky, etc. I'm not much of a competitive gamer but I like my graphics good :) - Watch movies & series, web browsing, the regular stuff ## OS Dual boot Linux + Windows 10 Home (up-gradable to 11). Specifically an Arch-based linux distro as the main OS (I can install this myself later on). I think I can play most of my games on Linux and do development of Windows-only applications in a VM. Dual boot is just in case I absolutely need to boot into Windows on bare metal to get something done that can't be done in a VM. If I can get GPU pass-through to work with this build that would be a big plus. ## Storage - 2x 500GB SSD (one drive for linux, one drive for windows) - The reason each OS gets a separate drive is I'd like to attach the physical Windows drive as a virtual disk to one of the VMs on my main OS as well as boot to it on bare metal. - 2x 1 TB HDD ## RAM - 32GB in total (I think 2 x 16 GB woud be fine) - expandable if possible ## CPU - Overclocking is not required I think, unless recommended. - No particular preference, anything that goes well with this build's requirements is fine I guess. ## GPU - Ray Tracing required - Should work well with Linux - I hear AMD is more open minded towards the linux community in regards to open source drivers, but in the end if a NVIDIA card gets me better performance I'd be fine to go with that and a proprietary driver instead. ## Case - I don't care about looks, just plain black is fine. - Window (to see the components) would be nice to have - LED bling is nice to have too but only if it can be turned off (at night). ## Motherboard ??? ## Others - On board wifi not required, I'll connect to the internet with an ethernet cable instead. - The desktop would be sitting close to me, so it should be relatively quiet. ## Peripherals Peripherals are not included in the budget, but listed here for compatibility with the build. ### Monitor ??? - Support at least 3 separate monitors ### Mouse ??? ### Keyboard ??? ## Possible builds List of valid PC builds that were suggested (and look good) to me: - https://pcpartpicker.com/list/xCwXXb (high end) - EU power supply cord: https://www.corsair.com/eu/en/Categories/Products/Power-Supply-Units/hxi-series-2017-config/p/CP-9020139-EU - https://be.pcpartpicker.com/list/c84kkX (budget friendly alternative)
