One of the main actors appears on camera and speaks directly to the audience, telling them what is about to happen. This twist would be more annoying, perhaps even more so, if "Homestead" was not so dramatically and technically impressive. In fact, there are probably plenty of people who would be willing to spend a few extra dollars just to see how many of their favorite survivors survive.

It all starts when two brothers of undisclosed foreign origin detonate a nuclear device on a boat off the coast of California, causing extensive damage and deaths in the Golden State and beyond. Ian Ross (Neal McDonough), the wealthy organizer of this catastrophe that upends the social order, has built the Homestead, a fortress-like mansion, in a vast expanse of the Rocky Mountains where he, his family, and a dozen employees can weather all kinds of inclement weather. We want chaos. Though they are self-sufficient, Ian realizes that sooner or later they will need more weapons and the people who know how to use them.

Fortunately, Ian has taken the precaution of hiring a team of ex-Special Forces agents, led by battle-hardened veteran Jeff Erickson, to provide additional security before the catastrophe strikes. But when Jeff arrives with his wife Tara (Ciaran Giovanni), who has only a vague military background, and their three children, chaos has already begun in the outside world. More and more desperate people are showing up, asking for supplies - and demanding them. At first, Ian and his devout wife Jenna insist that "the government or FEMA" will eventually deal with this. Jeff expresses deep doubts and warns people to prepare for the worst. The problem is that even a smart strategist like Jeff can inadvertently underestimate potential dangers.
