Who would’ve thought? I personally have fallen for the trap discussed by Sharma, where Google ads give you a link to a lookalike site. However, I noticed almost instantly that there was an issue with the website, and scampered away quite quickly. However, this isn’t all that ads are used for today. According to Marti (2017), “Retargeting makes it obvious to a user that this ad is for you, not just attached to the content.” To many, they probably think, “Why is it bad that the ad is for you?” Well, there are two issues. To start, this means that your cookies are shared, so this ad can follow you to other places that you go to. So when more people started using ad blockers, it didn’t seem to be as much of a surprise that they didn’t want to be followed by companies and their ads. Also, since this ad is for you, it is also bad for the marketers, as they could be missing an entire market because they aren’t advertising the products to them. Would removing retargeting ads be beneficial to marketers? So many people originally used ad blockers because they didn’t want to be retargeted and followed around. I feel like trying this strategy wouldn’t be a horrible idea, and maybe putting a little more money into the print ads because as Marti said, the print ads are more valuable. I think trying this would reach more markets and allow companies to try to regain the attention of those who installed ad blockers to ignore their ads.
