# Balcony Workshop ## A Woodworking (& other crafting) self-learning Jounery at one of the crowdest country in the world. Starting with a workshop smaller than a WORKBENCH! ### Balcony Workshop#1: I Make a mallet to make a mallet to build bench.... #### Description: Inspired By many great maker & woodworker on Youtube, I got enough motivation to overcome some difficulties which are quite different from those western youtube mentor, and would like to share my jounery with youguys. Originally I try to make a traditional mallet introduced by **Rex Krueger**, but later found out that I can't make it without a mallet.... So in this first episode, I will first make tow rough log mallet (Mallet MK1 & MK1.5), then make Rex' mallet (Mallet MK2). It's a 30cm diameter by 30cm long camphor tree log. I bought for $28 per log. you can see I already split four corners using axe head, wedge, hammer and janpanese nata axe. there are damages metal hitting metal. I quickly regrated doing that. **切** Maybe some of you guys living in Europe or North America will confused about spending too much to get this small unprocessed wood. there are sereval Historical factors related to it. like US modern envirment movement in 1960s significently influenced Taiwan, which shrinking Taiwan's forestry to nearly nothing **切** Traditional woodworking nearly disapeared. or turning into some kind of hipster hobby nowadays, we could said. theredore everyone consider wood is a fancy material, lumberyard like to sell fancy hardwood, normal wood like SPF also quite pricey than US or Japan.
