###### tags: `Lore` # Other Sol Governments ## Name: The Martian Coalition ### History: Life on the ‘Red Planet’ has been the fantasy of humanity for millenia. Little did they know back then that it would be humanity that brought life back to its surface. Manned expeditions to Mars began around the year 2045, and what first started as those few pioneers led to an explosive growth. By 2075, permanent colonies and stations had been established both on the ground and in space. Multiple agencies from across human civilization both worked, and at times competed to begin the process of making Mars the second home of humanity. This initial effort would be in vain. Early terraforming technologies were untested, unreliable, and prohibitively expensive. Despite many coming to call the red planet their homeland, resources and money previously funneled into the planet trickled out, and eventually halted when Earth fell to war. Faced with existential threat, the people of Mars - Scientists, Pioneers, experts and their families - elected to band together to ensure the survival of their people. Resources and technology were pooled into concentrated locations that quickly became the center of their civilization. Out of this period of strife, the Martian Coalition emerged. With their resources and manpower consolidated, Mars was capable of pulling off bigger and greater feats than ever before. The prospect of creating a prosperous society became more than an ideal, but something to be realized. Survival soon became progress, and after the end of the war on Earth, Mars elected to aid the cradle of humanity after intensive negotiation; they were no longer a colony, but an equal. The eventual contact with extraterrestrial life in the form of the Skrellian Federation would become the single greatest turning point in Martian history. The sharing of technology of resources propelled Mars to a point where the long-sought terraforming project could be realized. It would not be long after that the first Martians could walk the planet’s surface without an environment suit. ### Modern Day: By the current year, Mars has reached milestones that were once considered unfeasible at the turn of the second millenia. FTL and advanced technologies have allowed the mass importation of comets and asteroids, and centuries of work have paid off by giving the planet a breathable atmosphere. To protect this atmosphere, Mars has a system of large solenoid towers utilized to create its magnetic field; these towers have the secondary feature of acting as an energy storage system thanks to Superconducting Magnetic Energy System (SMES) technology. The Martian government is highly meritocratic, with a focus on academic and professional knowledge. The Martian Coalition utilizes a tiered system of governance, with the top-level consisting of a technocratic polity elected and supported by the various Martian interests, namely the academics, the scientists, the industrialists, and the military. Their lower tier of governance comes from the Martian City-States, each of which hold democratic elections for the city council, and separate ones for their electoral subdivisions. This body represents the Martian people and gives them a voice in Martian matters. Additional council organizations exist for the regions between or crossing the control of a City-State. The Martian Coalition maintains a large and professional armed forces, with a focus on expeditionary warfare and fast-moving, hard-hitting doctrines. The Martian Coalition Armed Forces (MCAF) has three branches; the Martian Coalition Army, the Martian Coalition Navy, and the Martian Marine Corps. The largest branch of the military is the Martian Navy, which holds a doctrine of numerous small craft for combat and patrol duties, supported by large carriers and battleships, often equipped with long-range mass drivers. Modern day Mars is split between two main areas, the verdant and prosperous cities and the sparsely populated territory in between. The cities of Mars are known for their beauty and prestige. Most terraforming work is focused in a city's immediate region, and are often filled with greenery and even natural water features. Most of Mars' population live within these large urban centers, supported by high living standards and a bustling economy. On the other hand, much of Mars remains untouched outside of mining, scientific, and industrial operations. These areas are colloquially known as the Badlands. The Badlands contains numerous derelict sites that date back centuries to the first mass exodus to the forming cities. Crime is often rife within this region, as are numerous organized gangs and even insurgencies. The vast and uncontrolled Martian plains are the perfect hotbed for these types of groups to form. The Badlands is also home to many Tyrmalin conclaves. These communties are known to become quite large, and many hold official council seats within the Martian Coalition. Their industrial nature has been a huge boon for the planet and its government, with Tyrmalin artisans and miners contributing greatly to the economy. Mars is known for the most prestigious science and academic institutions in the Sol system, with the Martian University and University of Mars being the most prolific. These two institutions are located around vast arcologies, and are often engaged in rivalry. ### Ethos: The Martian Coalition's motto, 'Ad Prospero - To Success', perfectly encapsulates the Martian spirit. Centuries of work to create a planet to call home has created a hardy and industrial people. ### Notable Stances Towards Corporations: The Martian Coalition generally views Corporations in a positive light, as their resources and industrial capacity is valuable to its productivity. However, the Martian government has stringent laws in-line with the Orion Confederation's stance in order to protect employees and consumers, which can severely affect megacorporations that are more inclined to conduct matters on their own terms. ### Influence: As one of the 'Big Four', Mars holds considerable sway both within the Orion Confederation and within the Sol system. Their economic, industrial, and martial might make them a trusty ally and a troublesome enemy. ## Name: Belt Colonial Union (The outer planets and their moons) ### History: The Belt Colonial Union (BCU) is a Democratic-Socialist polity which inhabits the majority of moons, asteroids, and planetoids located throughout the Sol system and some beyond. Compared to the other governments of Sol - Namely Earth, Mars, and Luna - The BCU is younger to the political stage of The Orion Confederation. Despite only a couple to a few centuries-worth of history, the BCU has grown to become a major power broker within the Confederation, particularly regarding trade, economy, and industry. The history of the BCU can be dated back to the unionization of the disparate workers of places like Europe, Ganymede, Callisto, and Ceres, along with Pluto and Eris, though both of these would partially secede from the Union in time. These workers banded together originally to lobby and protest working conditions set in place by the rapidly growing governments of the Sol System. These worker’s unions soon sparked a revolution that brought the people of the Belts under a single government that represented the men and women who worked in those dangerous conditions. The Belt Colonial Union was born. ((Talk with Ex about Titan, making it a robo place or something - revisit)) ### Modern Day: Despite their name, the BCU is not particularly communist or Marxist but does however support many socialist policies for their people such as Free Healthcare, Social Security, and other Community services that differ between the various planetoids under their governance. Most colonies of the Belt are more akin to large orbital facilities and installations tacked onto rocks, given gravity by either artificial generators or through centrifugal forces. These installations tend to have industries focussed around station & ship construction, mining, research, or other engineering endeavors. In addition to this, the largest installations of the Belt are also key trading nodes in the Sol System, namely Titan, Ceres, Triton, and Europa. ### Ethos: As a people, the ‘Belters’ as they are known are recognized for their hardworking nature, a strong grasp of the basic mechanics of space and astrophysics, and an emphasis on self-dependence and Utilitarianism. ## Name: The Reorganized Cooperative of Hades (Parts of Pluto, Eris and its satellites, and the Kuiper Belt) ### History: Typically known simply as the Hades Cooperative, this organization was born from political and societal differences between the Belt Colonial Union and its distant members. Originally started as a secessionist movement on Pluto, the Belt Colonial Union originally clamped down on these sentiments, yet the idea spread at an extraordinary rate, which quickly prompted the union’s authorities to bring the movement’s leaders together to negotiate terms. As per the Union’s charter, the respective organizations on the planetoids of Pluto and Eris would vote on the motion to secede, and the result was the respective peoples being split in twain, with one half remaining within the Union and the others going on to form the Hades Cooperative. The name stems from the name of Pluto’s satellite, Charon - Which was named after the ferryman of Hades. Charon was additionally where the secessionist movement was first founded. ### Modern Day: The Hades Cooperative maintains relatively amicable relations with the Orion Confederation, and warm relations with the Belt Colonial Union as a matter of necessity. As such, they have accepted an associate status within the Confederation, but are not a fully-fledged member out of choice. Inner-Sol media often represents the Hades Cooperative in a negative light, brandishing them as revolutionaries, pirates, and terrorists. While it is true that the less-legal and more belligerent members of society often hide within its territory, the cooperative itself, at-least publicly, heavily condones such actions and maintains a pretense of neutrality in the solar system’s affairs. ### Ethos:
