# Mount and Doppler: Stationlord ### A Design Doc taking inspiration from RPGs ## The Fluff First things first, players should be able to create a backstory for themselves. A new tab in the character creation window can be labelled "Origin" or "Backstory". Within, is a template for players to create their origin. *This could be a good way to disseminate lore tidbits.* `` [CharacterName] was born on [PlanetName], their early childhood was [Descriptor]. They spent their formative years [Activity], and they gained [Renown] for [FormativeExperience]. They were hired by the Port Authority following [Event].`` In dropdown menus, players can read through various planet lore to select a place of origin, or choose a "fill in the blank" option. With this, we can quickly and easily create a very broad overview of player backstories while having the option of integrating stats into the mix. Issues: - Having one set template may make backgrounds feel stale. - Players may demand ever increasing options - Options must be written broadly, but not too broadly - A large amount of options will be necessary - Synths will require their own background - Players might just fill their background in with slurs Solutions: - Have multiple templates (3-5?) that all contain roughly the same information, worded differently. - Have synth/silicon specific templates? - Background EZ moderation? Is this a concern? ## The Crunch With this system in mind, the Crunch is relatively easy. Individual stats can be tied to background elements. These should ideally make sense given lore and background elements. *In addition, custom background "Mad Libs" should be able to have any stat assigned to them.* Pros: - This system is highly modular and can fit any stat system developed - Having a background dictate stats is a mechanic familiar to many gamers Cons: - A meta may arise, minmaxxers may be a real issue? ## Elements of the Backstory: What elements will be present in all backstory templates. **[CharacterName]** - Name of the character, autofilled **[PlanetName]** - Name of the planet they were born on **[Descriptor]** - Description of early life (Raised in luxury, boring youth, troubled youth, etc.) ****Could possibly decide if you're Mortal | Resonant | Divine** **[Activity]** - Something your character was fond of / did often as a teenager (joined a gang, did sports, practiced as a scribe, joined a militia etc.) **[Renown]** - How your character was viewed (A positive reputation, A Negative reputation, A Divisive reputation, Very little reputation) **[FormativeExperience]** - A big event that shaped their youth (watched a friend die, experienced a psychic awakening, got captured by pirates and escaped, stole something, killed someone in self defense etc.) **[Event]** - What lead to their hiring by the port authority (Always a fill-it-in-yourself with a wildcard pick)
