## APJ ABDUL KALAM VISION 2020
India's Vision 2020 was initially a document prepared by Nivetha.SK the Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) of India's Department of Science and Technology under the chairmanship of A. P. J. Abdul Kalam and a team of 500 experts.The plan is further detailed in the book India 2020: A Vision for the New Millennium, which Kalam co authored with Y. S. Rajan.
Kalam described the plan as follows:"Transforming the nation into a developed country, five areas in combination have been identified based on India's core competence, natural resources and talented manpower for integrated action to double the growth rate of GDP and realize the Vision of Developed India".
Now there is a group or private organization called "Visionaries Organisation In Service to Society (VOISS)" and their page names in social-networking sites as "Let's complete his vision 2020" to promote this vision 2020 after the death of Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam on 27 July 2015.
**_Vision of APJ Abdul Kalam_**
* **Agriculture and food processing:** Aimed at doubling the present production of agricultural and food processing.
* **Infrastructure with reliable electric power:** Providing urban amenities to rural areas, and increasing solar power operations.
* **Education and Healthcare:** Directed towards literacy, social security, and overall health for the population.
* **Information and Communication Technology:** For increased e-governance to promote education in remote areas, telecommunication, and telemedicine.
* **Critical technologies and strategic industries:** The growth of nuclear technology, space technology and defence technology.
* **Faith in God.**
* Decrease the rate of poverty and illiteracy, make people educated through media, communities, social networking sites and increase the Indian market rate CURRENCY by purchasing Indian manufactured goods.

* A nation where the rural-urban divide has been reduced to a thin line. All parts of India will become developed.
* A nation where there is an equitable distribution of, and adequate access to, energy and quality water.
* A nation where agriculture, industry and the service sector work together with symphony.
* A nation where education with a good value system is not denied to any meritorious candidates because of societal or economic discrimination.
* A nation which is the best destination for the most talented scholars, scientists, and investors from around the world.
* A nation where the best of healthcare is available to all citizens of India
* A nation where governance is responsive, transparent and corruption-free.
* A nation where poverty has been totally eradicated, illiteracy removed, crime against women and children is absent, and no one in the society feels alienated.
* A nation that is prosperous, healthy, secure, devoid of terrorism, peaceful and happy, and continues on a sustainable growth path.
* A nation that is one of the best places to live in and is proud of its leadership.

## WORLD ELEPHANT DAY
World Elephant Day is an international annual event on August 12, dedicated to the preservation and protection of the world's elephants.
**Mission**
The goal of International Elephant Day is to create awareness of the urgent plight of African and Asian elephants, and to share knowledge and positive solutions for the better care and management of captive and wild elephants. African elephants are listed as "Vulnerable" and Asian elephants as "Endangered" on the IUCN Red List of threatened species.One conservationist has stated that both African and Asian elephants face extinction within twelve years. The current population estimates are about 400,000 for African elephants and 40,000 for Asian elephants, although it has been argued that these numbers are much too high.
#### Issues
**_Poaching_**
The demand for ivory, which is highest in China,leads to the illegal poaching of both African and Asian elephants. For example, one of the world's largest elephants, Satao, was recently killed for his iconic tusks.Another iconic Kenyan elephant, Mountain Bull, was also killed by poachers, and with the street value for ivory now exceeding that of gold, African elephants face a poaching epidemic.Elephants are also poached for meat, leather, and body parts, with the illegal wildlife trade putting elephants increasingly in danger, because it is perceived to be a low risk and high profit endeavor.Poachers are often considered trained for this activity due to the amount of tools needed to be transported as well as the large size of these animals.
**_Habitat loss_**
The loss of habitat due to deforestation, increases in mining, and agricultural activities has become problematic, especially for Asian elephants.The fragmentation of habitat also creates isolation - this makes breeding more difficult, and allows poachers to find the elephants and set traps more easily.Asian elephants have lost nearly 30-40% of their habitat making it incredibly difficult to maintain their offspring and themselves.
**_Human-elephant conflict_**
Human-elephant conflict is a significant concern, as human populations increase and forest cover decreases, forcing elephants into close proximity with human settlements.Incidents include crop damage and economic losses, as well as both elephant and human casualties.
**_Mistreatment in captivity_**
A lack of legislation regarding the care and treatment of elephants in zoos, circuses, and tourism often leads to their mistreatment.Captivity can be a serious threat to elephants, and Asian elephants are often illegally captured in the wild and trafficked into the lucrative tourism industry.
