## GCC2021 BoF: Handling georeferenced data in Galaxy
# "Earth in Galaxy" πΊππ
This is a shared document for collaborative notes from the BoF session.
**Please feel free to edit**. π
Also after the BoF! This document will stay alive (just not anymore linked from *sched*).
Outside of the BoF, let's also chat in the GCC2021 **Slack channel [#bof-gis](https://gcc2021.slack.com/archives/C025DTEPWAE)**.
There is also a dedicated **sofa table** in the **[Galactic Cafe](https://live.remo.co/e/galaxy-social-event), Floor 3** (**GIS** table), to hang around before and after the BoF, and whenever during the GCC **CollaborationFest**. π

## How to edit in HackMD
If you see this page in **view mode**, what you probably do after opening it, click on the *Edit* button **on the top of the window**.
Later you can always do either of the following to enable editing:
1. **Edit mode**: Ctrl+Alt+E, or click the *button with a pencil* on the **top left of the window** to switch to edit mode
2. **Both mode**: Ctrl+Alt+B, or click the *button with a square* with a vertical line in the middle (among the 3 buttons on the **top left of the window**). Nice with a big-enough screen.

## Meeting minutes, questions
**Please feel free to Q&A, chat, note**, also after the BoF! This document will stay alive (just not anymore linked from a fully public place).
The discussion will include, but not be limited to, the following questions. **Please feel free to add your answers or comments underneath** π
#### πΊ What kind of georeferenced data do|did you work with or are interested in?
- Matus: work with none (other than participant lists), interested in all π
- Anne: climate data
- Daniel: epidemiology
- Dave: air traffic routing etc.
-
-
-
-
-
#### π©π½βπ» What related software | approach do you want to mention?
- Matus: my knowledge is limited to the OpenStreetMaps & co ecosystem
- Some tools: CartograPlant, CartograTree
- Panoply by NASA
- Tripal integrated with GIS (e.g. agricultural samples); Tripal Galaxy
- Tripal community meets every year in January in San Diego, as part of PAG.
- Jill Wegerzyn at UCONN
- Nic Herndon at Eastern Carolina U
- Sean Buehler Tennesses Meg Staton
- Alex Lowe, ECU, is signed up for CoFest
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
#### π Your experience with geo data in Galaxy?
- Matus: basic tutorials from Yvan et al. & Anne, so no real GIS, right?
- CoSSci is an old Galaxy server for social science, they're generating maps (UCI). Dave: 6yrs no more contact http://socscicompute.ss.uci.edu/ Looks like up & running π
- Somebody probably creates Covid-19 maps in Galaxy (can be Jupyter or RStudio)
- Pangeo Jupyter Notebooks
- In some data in Galaxy: locations ad hoc in some columns
-
-
-
-
-
#### π What do we need to add to Galaxy | GTN | the whole ecosystem?
- Dave: 90% of all data is unified by having geolocation
- Dave: If we can add those (hopefully) <5 geo-data standards into Galaxy, we're opening π to include π
- Melissa: JSON is used increasingly (unless data is too big)
- Anne: we could do more if we had more computational power
- Anne: for climate metadata, special tools are needed to handle it (DataCube(lat, long, time) + metadata)
- Dan & all: Nice dealing | user interface for data such as e.g. calendar (dates etc. incl. paleo)
- Dave & Anne: Let's not forget other planets & co (weather/climate, astrobio, radioastro, ...)
- Dave: What is the "reference genome"|reference data for Earth?
-
-
-
-
-
## Action points
- Followup tomorrow, as part of CoFest. (without North America West coast)
- Look at datatypes first, whether they are string|int underneath, but add semantics to know how to show & interact
- Analysis of different catalogues of data for Earth Science: https://box.pionier.net.pl/d/529599305c0e43d9bf28/
- Include in the Community Roadmap work. Where else? (Technical? IDC? ..?)
