# Labour Ministry mulls scheme for gig workers
"The Ministry of Labour and Employment is exploring the development of a new scheme aimed at providing greater protection and benefits to India’s growing gig workforce. With gig and platform-based jobs becoming increasingly popular, the government recognizes the need to address the challenges faced by workers in these sectors, who often lack job security, benefits, and social protections that traditional employees receive.

The proposed scheme, still under discussion, is expected to offer a framework for ensuring the welfare of gig workers across various industries, including ride-hailing, delivery services, and freelancing platforms. Central to this initiative will be creating a mechanism for providing benefits such as health insurance, pensions, and paid leave. Additionally, the government aims to introduce better regulation of payment structures, ensuring that workers receive fair compensation and have access to timely payments.

This move comes in response to the rapid growth of the gig economy in India, which has seen a surge in the number of people opting for flexible, short-term contracts or freelance work instead of conventional 9-to-5 jobs. While these workers enjoy flexibility, many face financial instability due to the absence of a formal employment framework.

Under the proposed scheme, gig workers could also benefit from improved dispute resolution mechanisms, offering a clearer path for resolving conflicts between workers and platform companies. The scheme would ensure that these workers are not excluded from labor rights, offering them a level of protection similar to traditional employees.

The Labour Ministry is expected to work closely with trade unions, gig platforms, and other stakeholders to design a policy that balances the needs of the workers with the interests of businesses. If implemented, this scheme could mark a significant shift in India’s labor market, making it one of the first countries to provide a comprehensive support system for gig workers on a national scale.
