(Draft) Speculative Design for predicting mental illness using diverse behavioral data. === #### A master's thesis research plan by Tzu-Fan, Cheng. #### The thesis is supervised by Professor Janaka Rajapakse. #### The study is expected to take place from February to May 2024. ### Abstract In today's society, the number of people suffering from mental illness is much greater than in the past. Especially in Chinese society, most people do not regard mental illness as a disease. Chinese society has a stronger hierarchy, and through obligations and responsibilities, everyone needs to have high psychological quality. However, mental illness has become a disease that the society needs to pay attention to. If we can predict the mental illness by diverse behavioral, maybe it can reduce a lot of unknown risks. Improve mental illness through proactive intervention. Introduction --- ### Motivation I have been suffering from a long-term mental illness called narcolepsy. Although my symptoms are very mild, they do not have a big impact on my life. But when I was a senior high school student, my narcolepsy was quite severe at the time. I didn't get a senior high school degree because of that. My parents kept blaming me because they didn't think sleeping was a disease. Everything didn't get better until I got treatment. I think there are quite a few mental illnesses that are hard to detect. Therefore, I need to design a method that can determine whether a person has signs of mental illness by accumulating large amounts of data. ### Purpose I want to design a method that can determine whether a person has signs of mental illness by accumulating large amounts of data. This method can predict several common mental illnesses. And I hope this method can be used in public places as an interactive device to help society solve the problem of mental illness. Or it can be combined with people’s identification devices to as an additional function. Literature Review --- (I'm researching in speculative design and mental illness.) Experimental Methods --- (I might obtain data from interviews with people suffering from mental illness or doctors who treat them, and use it to build a predictive model.) Expected Results --- (I think I will make a technology demonstration device to apply this technology. The technology needs to be able to accurately analyze whether someone is at high risk of suffering from a certain mental illness) Planning Schedule --- |Month|Plan| |-|-| |Jan.|Complete the research plan and find relevant literature.| |Feb. - May|Researching.....| |June|Complete the research and organize materials.| |July|Oral and finish the thesis.| References --- (I'm searching.)
