# Guidelines for vacations hours for QDL graduate students and postdocs ## Abstract This docmument is to give some guidelines on how to wisely use your time for having a vacation. Since it's **guidelines** rather than **rules**, you can implement this with some flexibilities. ## Period of vacation All members of our lab will have 20 days of vacation a year, which does not include weekneds, any of national holidays or sick leaves. Also, you can distribute these 20 days in whatever way you want. For example, you can put all 20 days together combined with weekends and make it a long four-week vacation. Or you can have four one-week vacations in each season. It's all up to your decision. ## Approval for a short leave You do not need to get any permission from your advisor for having a vacation, as long as its total period is 14 days or less. ## Report for a long leave If you plan to be away 15 days or longer, please report at your earliest covenience. Most of these long leaves will be accepted by default. But sometimes the schedule might have to be negotiated if there is an urgent work needs to be managed with your help. ## Sick leave No discussion is required for any sick leaves. Just stay home and get better. If sick leave gets longer than 14 days, please report when you have time to do so. ## Flexibility No one will keep track of how many holidays you are taking. Yourself will keep track of roughly how many holidays you are taking and your conscience will be trusted. A few days of more less from 20 days is acceptible. ## Responsibility for flexible holidays I believe 20 days of holidays is relatively generous for graduate students by any standard in the world. This policy was cjpsem by considering the nature of our work: necessitiy of creativity and self-driven attitude. Such flexibility and freedom is intended for boosting these. If you are a graduate student, you will get a PhD after spending 5-6 years in our lab (maybe one year less if you already got master's degree before joining us) after finishing N projects with M publications. Once this time arrives, you will leave the group with whatever you achieved until then, as long as you have produced more than minimum requirement for a PhD. Knowing these conditions, use your vacations wisely to maximize your desired outcomes. In the end, you will be responsible for your PhD, not your advisor.
