**Set up your printer with the HP Smart app**
Add your printer to HP Smart and follow the guided setup to connect to your computer or mobile device.
1. If you are setting up the printer on a Wi-Fi network, prepare the printer for setup.
* Place the printer and the computer or mobile device close to the Wi-Fi router.
* Enable Wi-Fi on your computer or mobile device and connect to your network. If the computer is connected to the network with an Ethernet cable, temporarily disconnect the cable and use the Wi-Fi connection during setup.
* Enable Bluetooth on the computer or mobile device so HP Smart can discover the printer during setup.
* For Windows computers, turn on Windows Update to make sure Windows is always up to date.
* After installing HP Smart for iOS and Android, turn on Mobile Device Location Services and allow the app to use your location to discover the printer and offer solutions during setup.
* Multiple printers may appear within range of your device during setup. Make sure you select the correct printer. Do not select a printer with DIRECT in its name, as this is for Wi-Fi Direct connections only.
2. Open HP Smart.
* If this is the first time you have opened HP Smart, the application will attempt to discover and configure the printer.
* If this is not the first time you have opened HP Smart, click Add Printer or the plus sign to find your printer.
3. On the connection type screen, select Wi-Fi, USB, or Network. The options displayed vary depending on your computer or mobile device. Follow the steps to complete the setup.
* If you are using a Wi-Fi connection and your printer cannot be found, continue to the next step.
4.Restore Wi-Fi setting mode.
Most printers with a touch screen or menu: Open the Wireless or Settings menu, select Settings or Network Settings, and then select Restore Network Settings.
Printers without a touch screen or menu: Access the Wi-Fi Reset configuration mode on your HP printer to restore default settings by pressing the buttons on your printer.
5. Within two hours, close and reopen HP Smart, then add the printer again.
6. Follow the guided setup screens to complete the printer setup.
**How to resolve HP printer installation errors**
In most cases, driver installation errors can be resolved by simply reinstalling the software again, sometimes a reboot is required before attempting the installation again.
But in the case of more complex software like the HP printer software, a failed installation can cause all subsequent installation attempts to fail. The reason is that a failed installation can leave behind locked files or registry information, causing the next installation to fail.
In these cases, the next step is to first uninstall the previous installation so that a clean system can be used to reinstall the HP driver software. The easiest way to do this is to uninstall the HP printer software from Control Panel -> Uninstall (or Add/Remove Programs). Uninstall a program is located in the Control Panel under Programs -> Programs and Features in Windows 7 and later.
Also, you can remove the HP printer in the Devices and Printers section of Control Panel.
However, if the HP printer software installation fails at an early stage, the software may not appear in the uninstall list in Control Panel. That means that the removal of the failed software will not be possible in that way. The next thing to try in that case is to use a cleanup utility to repair the damaged registry. Microsoft used to have the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility for this purpose, but due to conflicts with Office 2007, it was superseded by the Microsoft Fix It solution.
If you are running XP or Vista, it is also possible that the Windows installer is corrupted. In that case, you can simply try downloading the Windows installer and reinstalling it.
If it is not possible to reinstall the Windows Installer, try to re-register it:
– Open a command prompt with administrator rights.
– Type: msiexec /unregister and press Enter.
– After the command completes, type: msiexec /register and press Enter again.
For HP Officejet printers, HP used to offer a driver removal utility that could help you remove the HP printer driver for specific models. Unfortunately, this utility is no longer available on them.
Other steps that may help:
– Run a disk cleanup to clear the temporary folders, which are used for temporary installation files.
– Stop HP services using Manage Computer to prevent DLLs from being blocked.
**Reinstalling the HP Printer Software**
After the clean installation is complete and the Windows installer is repaired, you must reinstall the HP printer driver software. Disconnect the HP printer and reboot before doing this so that Windows does not install any default drivers for the HP device. During the installation, you can reconnect the printer when prompted by the installation process. Note that even for wireless printers, a physical connection to the PC is sometimes required during initial setup. See the printer manual for more information.
If the installation still fails and you are using a USB connection, try using a different USB port and make sure you are not using an external USB hub between the PC and the HP printer.
