Last season, Bolton were losing so much money they risked violating EFL rules. Sales of players such as Davies and Pearson helped stem the tide but it still wasn't enough.

Ken Hemmings may be quiet, but intermediaries say he is keenly aware that his business model is failing.

The decision to sack Alex Neil

Preston never before fired their manager this late into a season before; rather it was due to poor results and financial issues at the club that necessitated this action.

Hemmings has taken strides to establish a viable business model at the club and this has had negative repercussions for Neil. He resented being prevented from spending freely in the transfer market and having to sacrifice players in order to meet wage demands.

The club had also expressed concerns over a number of disappointing signings, most notably Wes Hoolahan who joined just before Euro 2022, and Neil's failure to maximize his potential - having only won once out of eight games under him - prompting this decision. His replacement will be assistant Alan Irvine for Saturday's match against Blackburn while receiving a PS2 million pay-off from the club.

The transfer window

Preston have already seen two high-profile departures this summer with central defender Ben Davies leaving for Manchester United for an undoubted fee and full back Tom Cunningham leaving on loan to Cardiff until the end of the season. Cunningham had become a favourite at Deepdale since moving from Bristol City three years ago but never managed to establish himself regularly; since leaving he has found work at Championship rival Middlesbrough.

Tom Barkhuizen has also been linked with an exit from Deepdale. A number of clubs have shown an interest in his services; should the Preston talisman move, however, it will be back to a familiar environment - former Rotherham manager Gareth Ainsworth introduced him at Adams Park from Stoke in 2020/21.

The Deepdale stadium

Deepdale Stadium is home to Preston North End FC, currently competing in the Championship division. Established as both a cricket and rugby club in 1876, Deepdale Stadium stands as one of football's oldest grounds and has seen many important moments over its storied history.

Following Hillsborough and Taylor Report, British football underwent a period of introspection; Deepdale was no exception. Following suit, its stadium underwent renovation, with new stands being added at each of its ends; these were inspired by Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Genoa. These construction works occurred gradually over several years.

The Sir Tom Finney Stand honors legendary Preston player Sir Tom Finney with its namesake statue standing proudly outside the stadium. To the south lies the Invincibles Stand while away fans are housed in Bill Shankly Kop, which features traditional English style seating arrangements. Additionally there are fast food stands located throughout the stadium as well as parking at Moorfields Special School that costs PS4.50 per car per match day - more details here.

The Euxton training ground

Bolton are still fighting hard for Championship survival and that was made evident last night during their thrilling 2-2 draw with Charlton. Bolton went behind early after Ademola Lookman scored, thanks to some appalling Bolton defending, but Emile Heskey scored with a close range volleyed finish that reduced the deficit before Josh Vela's daisy cutter from an impossible angle secured a point for their visitors.

Yesterday's brief statement included by owner Sam Hemmings revealed that he has sold Euxton training ground to another north west football club - an indication of how far Hemmings has come in English football as his wealth surpasses that of Sir Paul McCartney in terms of Sunday Times Rich List rankings and thus willing to back clubs outside Premier League competition.

In 2018, the EFL Annual General Meeting approved in principle a policy which allows it to sanction individuals who cause damage to clubs and football. Unfortunately, it appears unlikely that this will ever come into play.
