The author depicted the facinating scenarios of Longyearbyen in Norway to take us into the closest settlement to the North Pole. It is hard to imagine the taste of these food he described, because the ingredients of the dishes are rarely seen in temperate or tropical regions. These boreal(北方的) species such as reindeers, seals, white ptarmigan and even polar bears, are only legally hunted by licensed hunters during certian periods of the year, so the residents also depends on imported food for their meals.

The area the article mentioned make me recall two things. One is the novel named "Witcher", and the other is the race name "Viking". Both of these two things have a common ground, that is, the background takes place on the northern area which is lacked of materials. Due to the reason, human being has to find the way out survive within the harsh environment. I think that is the factor that make northern dietary habits quite distinct from other areas.
