# Week 3 workshop slides ## plan for today 1. peer feedback 2. group work 3. project planning --- # peer feedback --- The summary & reactions you wrote for today will form Part 1 of your verification report. They are a first draft though. Feedback can make them better. Create a HackMD document for your group using the Template available in Moodle. Each group member should add their Summary and Reactions to the document --- #### 1. Feedback on summaries - Add 2 bubble comments in each summary for each of your team members - what could they improve? - have they covered everything needed in their summary? - are there parts that could be communciated more clearly? - is everything they have included accurate? --- #### 2. Feedback on reactions - Add 1 more bubble comment that conveys your reaction to their reaction  - did you have a similar thought when you were reading the paper or do you disagree? - does their reaction make you think about something different? --- # 20 min timer... go --- # group work --- # everyone hates group work --- ## why? 10 min timer, brainstorm on the board --- - coordinating with other people is hard - communicating with other people is hard - distributing the workload fairly is hard - individual differences (skill/communication/perspectives) can be a challenge - there are always people who don’t pull their weight --- ## why do we make you do it? --- ## in the real world.... - no one works by themselves - no one learns new things alone - employers expect you to have “soft skills” > learning from peers can be fun and rewarding --- ## how can *you* make your group work better - create a shared vision about what you want to acheive - set really clear expectations about HOW - behaviour, workload, communication, deadlines --- ## how can *you* make your group work better - create a supportive environment - it's ok to fail or make mistakes - it's ok to ask questions - it's ok to be overwhelmed - its ok to be frustrated - you work through it together... --- ## how can *we* make your group work better - build in assessment mechanisms the encourage everyone to contribute - give you a chance to let us know its not working - self & peer assessment --- # group work (10%) You need to work as a team to reproduce the descriptives/plots for your paper and put together a presentation for workshop in Week 8. This component of the assessment will be determined via self assessment (5%) & peer assessment (5%) --- Each week (from W4-W8) you will assess *yourself* and each *team member* using 5 criteria. Jenny and Kate will decide criteria 1 and 2. As a **class**, you will decide criteria 3-5. > Today you need to talk about what you value and write criteria around those behaviours --- For example, Jenny and I value *fairness* (i.e. everyone is contributing) and *respect* (i.e. everyone feels like they are included and that their contribution is valued). --- ### Our criteria... 1. My teammate pulled their weight - i.e. attended Q&A, actively contributed during group meetings, helped to google/troubleshoot and supported others in their learning 2. My teammate interacted with the group in a way that created an inclusive environment for us to learn from each other --- ### ideas for your criteria #### things you might value... - communication/engagement/effort - kindness/patience - humour/memes/gifs - flexibility/adaptability - constructive feedback - listening --- # 10 min timer... go talk with your group about how you want to work together on your project and write 3 possible assessment criteria --- # share your criteria... add your 3 assessment criteria to the HackMD - link in Moodle --- # let's discuss as a group, read and discuss all the possibilities, decide on your **top 3**, and leave a bubble comment with your lab day/time and group number on your 3 preferred options --- # let's negotiate which 3 additional criteria shall we use for the self and peer evaluations? --- # project plan example plan... https://internship3361.netlify.app/posts/2021-03-05-example-reproducibility-plan/ --- Before we go... code like caterpillars https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SV7UX7eNGj8 ---
