Risk management is a key component to project management as a whole, and helps ensure that a project is able to be completed. Like many other aspects of project management, there are several tools a project manager can use for the case of risk management, such as Gantt Charts, spreadsheets, and other dashboards. These help a PM visualize and delegate tasks to their team members so that risks are able to be detected and taken care of in a timely manner. **Common Project Risks** In Information Technology Project Management 9th ed. by Kathy Schwalbe, a few prominent risk types are listed as “market risk, financial risk, technology risk, people risk, and structure/process risk” (Schwalbe 2019). She also provided a list of examples to help visualize each risk, and so below I have summarized her examples. Market Risk: Will the project be marketable, and will users accept the product before our competitors create something better? Financial Risk: Is this project something that we can afford and will it meet the projectections and expectations of our stakeholders? Technology Risk: Are we technologically able to create this project and how future proof will this project be? People Risk: Do we have teams and project managers capable of delivering this project and what is their relationship with our customers? Structure/Process Risk: How accessible is this project and will it disrupt or clash with existing systems? While these risk categories may not include every problem that can arise, it certainly encompasses a large majority of potential risks. By planning for and monitoring these areas, a project manager will be one step closer to keeping their project stable and on track to completion. **Your Role As A Team Member** It is the responsibility of the project manager to plan for and help resolve risks, but it’s partially on the team members to identify and report risks as they arise. For example, if you notice that a vital component of the project is defective, or malfunctioning, then you should immediately report that to your project manager so that they may deploy a solution. Additionally, communication of risks among team members is important so that everyone on the team is aware of problems that arise in case they are working with that problematic area. **Works Cited** Ray, Stephanie. “The Risk Management Process in Project Management.” ProjectManager.com, ProjectManager.com, 2 July 2020, www.projectmanager.com/blog/risk-management-process-steps.
